Schwartz scores 20 points in home loss

The Tempe Buffaloes held off a strong comeback attempt by the Prescott Badgers in the final minutes to beat Prescott 72-67 in the Badger Dome.

Korey Schwartz, the only Prescott player in double figures, led the Badgers with 20 points. Kasai Hayden, 20 points and Cameron Snyder 19 points, combined for 9 three pointers. They were a one-two punch that ultimately was too much for the Badgers to overcome.

Prescott led early, but the Buffaloes held the lead for the remainder of the contest. Though the Tempe lead would extend into double digits, the Badgers would not quit. The Buffaloes led 35-27 at the half and 61-52 after three quarters.

The push to take over the game came midway through the final quarter. Ryan Mickelson knocked down a basket cutting the deficit to 63-56, with 5:40 remaining.

After a Buffaloes basket, Ayden McKenna's drive into the lane made it 65-58. Korey Schwartz would make two of four at the line, while Tempe got one of two to fall, and the deficit was 66-60. Jason Parent's basket got Prescott even closer at 66-62 with four minutes to play.

When Aydan McKenna nailed a long range shot from the corner, the Badgers were within three at 68-65 with 2:33 remaining. Missed free throws and a pair of turnovers were the norm for the next two minutes.

Then Dellin Boyd went to the line and calmly hit two free throws to put the Badger knocking at the door trailing 68-67 with :29 left. A Buffaloe basket on a drive along the baseline, a costly Badger turnover,  and a pair of Buffaloe free throws sealed the deal for the visitors.

Tempe evens their record at (2-2), while the Badgers (3-5) will travel to Cottonwood to face Mingus on Tuesday at 7pm.
