The Prescott Badgers have a new head coach and a lot of new faces on this years squad, so expectations are to see this team grow. In their home opener, the Badgers struggled most of the night in a 79-33 defeat at the hands of the Arcadia Titans.
The Titans (4-2), were able to get loosened up by playing in the Thanksgiving Tournament at Central High School in Phoenix. So with five games already under their belt, they had a definite advantage. Two of the Titans agreed. Owen Shaw said, "Playing in the tournament really helped us to form some chemistry on the court." Max Majerle agreed, "Yeah, nothing like playing against other teams. We are heading in the right direction."
The Badgers held their own early, in fact the game was tied at seven midway through the opening quarter. Then a complete change in the tide as the Titans took over control of the game. Turnovers and poor shooting by Prescott began to mount. The Titans took advantage by getting their shots to fall, closing the opening quarter with a 14-0 run in the final 3:41, to lead 21-7.
Things got worse as the Badgers continued to struggle offensively. Arcadia increased the lead to 30-9 on baskets by Max Majerle and Carter Murphy with 4:02 left in the first half.
Milap Owens and Ethan Pena did all they could to help keep the Badgers in the game by scoring 9 of the 11 second quarter points, but the battle was up hill all the way. As the teams ran off the court at halftime, Arcadia had a commanding 44-18 lead.
Things did not improve in the second half as the Badgers just could not get any rhythm going, trailing by as much as 62-24 with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter. Aaron Greene's layup at then end of the quarter left the score at 62-28. Arcadia ended up shooting just over 70% from the floor, as their scoring was well balanced trhough the four quarters.
The final quarter was a running clock, as the Bagders got outscored by 12 in the final 8 minutes. Jaylin Bibbs came off the bench to lead the Titans in scoring with 14. Max Majerle scored all of his 13 points in the first half, as the starters sat most of the second half. Prescott could have helped their cause greatly from the charity stripe, but shot only only 52% from the free throw line.
Prescott coach Travis Stedman said, "We came across a team with a ton of great athletes, that include a couple of Division 1 players, with a few games under their belts. I think we allowed the speed of the game to affect us offensively and take us out of our execution flow. Defensively, we did a lot of really nice things, but on to many occasions failed to close out hard on the shooters and box out on the week side." In regards to growing pains for his team,"Fortunately we are talking about game one and not 21. Everything we have to do is correctable in practice, and will be improved on by game time Thursday. We're just looking to to learn and get better every single day."
Arcadia improved to (4-2) on the season, while the Badgers (0-1) will travel to face Deer Valley tomorrow night at 7pm, before heading to Sedona to play four games in the Pagos Pizza Classic this weekend.
