In a brief ceremony at Prescott High School, senior Jake Schulz signed his letter of intent to play baseball for the Dixie State University Trailblazers in St. George, Utah beginning in fall 2019.
Schulz surrounded by his family and friends was all smiles as he signed the document to play baseball at the next level. "I feel truly blessed that I am getting this opportunity. I have worked very hard, and this has been my goal, and I am ready to play."
Dixie State will be a Division 2 school for Schulz's freshmen season, but they move to Division 1 his sophomore season, as they join the WAC (Western Athletic Conference). The move will give him exposure at even a higher level. Grand Canyon University, in Phoenix, is in the WAC. Schulz said, "It will be fun to come to play at Grand Canyon. They have a good facility there too." That will give us all a closer distance to go see the former Badger play baseball again as well.
Schulz said he is impressed by what he saw when he visited the campus. "They have great facilities up there, and by far the best field I will have ever played on. It has a big league vibe."
Dixie State University has a student body of nearly 10,000 with 423 faculty on staff. It was founded in 1911, and was granted University status in 2011. To learn more about the program, you may go to their website at www.dixiestateathletics.com
As a Badger, Schulz, who hit .299 last season, will once again play shortstop and pitch. "This will be it for pitching, since they are taking me as an infielder, said Schulz." Looking into his senior season for the Badgers, his goal is to help his team win a state championship, something the Badgers last did in 2002. "I would really like to help bring a championship back to Prescott, added Schulz."
