Grand Canyon Region Champ gets blown out at Salpointe Catholic

There were some blowouts last night in the quarterfinal round of the Arizona High School football playoffs, but one thing was for sure, if you were a #5 seed, you were a winner.   All #5 seeds in each division won.

That should have been a good sign for 1A Hayden Lobos, as they went into the championship game versus the Superior Panthers, as a #5 seed. Though they were beaten at Superior 46-6 back on September 28, after their upset win over #1 Williams, there was a glimmer of hope. That theory went out the window in the opening quarter as the Panthers jumped out to 28-6 lead. Superior led 44-6 with 7 minutes in the second quarter, before the Lobos answered to make it 44-12. The Panthers punched two more TDs in, and led 58-12 at the half. Superior finished a perfect season at (11-0) with the 70-20 win over the Lobos. Hayden, who surprised many by getting to the championship game, ends their season at (8-4).

In 4A action, Mingus gave up 35 first quarter points in their loss at Salpointe Catholic. The number 1 seed led 62-14 after three quarters. Mingus ends their season at (9-3). Greenway, who knocked out the Prescott Badgers last week, suffered a 30 point loss at Desert Edge, 49-19. Sahuaro led 14-12 at the half, then put 43 points on the board in the second half to win 57-19 over Seton Catholic. Saguaro blistered Cactus 69-6, with a 55-0 lead at the half.

Page trailed 28-8 entering the fourth quarter in 3A action, but fell short despite scoring two 4th quarter touchdowns 28-22.

In 2A, Phoenix Christian trailed 24-7 entering the fourth quarter, and scored 20 points in the final 12 minutes to beat Morenci Jr/Sr 27-14 on the road.

Upset of the night was #7 St. Johns on the road, pounding #2 Trivium Prep 47-7. The two other surprises were #6 Perry blowing out #3 Desert Vista 49-20, and #6 Sabino, that used a 20 point fourth quarter to end #3 Snowflake's season 30-14.

Semifinal matchups will be played at neutral sites with 4A, 5A, and 6A on Friday, and 2A and 3A games on Saturday.
