Prescott comes up short on long road trip

The Prescott Badgers made their second trip this season to play the Dorados of Canyon del Oro High School. The first game was postponed due to the monsoon storms rolling through Tucson. The Badgers fought a tough battle but came up on the short end of a 35-23 score.

The Dorados took the opening kickoff and scored on a 76 yard pass from CdO quarterback Zachary Eidenschink to Cory Bonstrom. Prescott responded with a 27 yard Bryce Peters' field goal, trailing 7-3 midway through the opening quarter.

Canyon del Oro pushed their lead to 11, when Diego Munguia scored on a 16 yard run. Raymond Duarte's kick made the score 14-3, with 7:39 on the clock.

The Badgers moved the ball once again, but the Dorado defense held and Prescott settled for another Peters' field goal at the 1:20 mark in the first quarter.

The Dorados did a good job mixing up their offensive plays once again moving the ball down the field. A holding penalty kept CdO out of the end zone. The Badgers defense did the rest, giving Prescott the ball at their own 10 yard line.

Austin Clark fumbled on the exchange with Sylas Espitia on the first play giving the ball. back to the Dorados. prescott got the ball on a cdo fumble.

Clark picked up the Badger first touchdown of the game, on a 45 yard run with 3:39 in the 2nd quarter. Bryce Peters added the PAT, but Prescott trailed 14-13.

The Dorados were able to move the ball again, this time with addtional help. A pair of penalties by Prescott ended up giving CdO the ball at the Prescott 4 yard line. Dorado quarterback Zachary Eidenschink called his own number, and went behind his center from 2 yards out to give the Dorados a 21-13 lead with :32 left in the first half.

Austin Clark completed his first pass of the night to Aaron Greene at midfield. Clark hit Greene again to get to the Dorados 32 yard line. Clay Gross came in to attempt a field goal, but CdO deflected the kick to end the half.

Prescott received the ball to start the second half. After some positive yards, the Badgers coughed the ball up at the Prescott 45 yard line with 9:12 in the third quarter.

The Badgers dodged another bullet when Aaron Greene stripped the ball from the Dorados runner at the Prescott 7 yard line. Prescott was forced to punt, but Austin Clark had to chase a high snap that went over his head. Clark was finally able to punt the ball into CdO territory. After an exchange of possesions, the Badgers had the ball to start the final quarter. Prescott decided not to roll the dice, after a timeout, on a 4th and 4 play at the Dorados 18 yard line, instead settling for a Bryce Peters 29 yard field goal with just over ten minutes left. It was Peters' third field goal, which equalled his total of last week at Flagstaff.

CdO went up 28-16 on a 13 yard run by Diego Munguia with 7:47 remaining. Munguia finished with 174 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Prescott tried to pick up the pace and get larger chunks of yardage, but Austin Clark's pass was intercepted by Bonstrom with 5:08 to play. Canyon del Oro ran the ball and scored with 3:49 to play when Diego Munguia scored his third touchdown of the game, to extend the Dorados lead to 35-16.

The Badgers came right back and scored with three mintues left, capped off on an Austin Clark 20 yard run. Down 35-23, Prescott attempted an onside kick by Clay Gross. Unfortunately an eager Badger jumped off side on the attempt, giving the Dorados the ball at midfield.

Clark finished with 168 yards rushing with two touchdowns. Passing, Clark connected on 9 of 16, for 116 yards and one intereception. Dellin Boyd had four receptions for 28 yards, and three by Aaron Greene for 75 yards. On defense, Colton Amos and Hunter Kronberg both recovered fumbles.

Prescott coach Cody Collett said, "We just came up a little short tonight. They are a very physical team, a playoff team, that is coached well."

Canyon del Oro improves to (4-1), while Prescott drops to (3-2). The Badgers will host Coconino for homecoming, next Friday at 7pm.
