Lopez tip at the buzzer is the difference

The Prescott Badgers opened the 2017-18 season with a buzzer beater to beat the Apache Junction Prospectors 53-51. Braden Lopez was in the right place at the right time, "I saw the ball hit the rim and come towards me, so I went right back up with it because I knew the clock was running out," said Lopez, who had a grin from ear to ear. It ended a game that started off quite differently.

The Badgers jumped out to a 13-2 lead midway through the first quarter, and it seemed with a big size advantage, that things would continue in the Badgers favor. Not so fast my friend.  The Prospectors behind Evan Quiroz's eight first quarter points, roared back to trim the Prescott lead to two at the end of the first quarter.

Prescott used a pair of three pointers by Kody Jones to increase the lead to seven at the half. Apache Junction refused to go away, staying in striking distance with a patient offense and timely three point shots.

Korey Schwartz came of the bench in the third quarter to pull down some big rebounds and tossed in a couple of buckets, but the Prospectors trailed by six to start the final quarter. Turnovers by the Badgers and timely shooting by Apache Junction made things quite interesting in the final minutes as Bringham Milkey hit a three pointer with :53 left to tie the game for the first time since the teams first took the court.

Prescott took a time out to set up a play which ended up being a long range jumper from the corner. As the ball hit the far end of the rim and bounced out, Braden Lopez was gaining a good position for the followup shot if need be. Lopez went high over the defender and with one hand, put the ball through the net as time expired. The Badgers stormed the court to celebrate the win.

Apache Junction, who was led in scoring by Evan Quiroz's 27 points, drops to (0-6) on the season.

The Badgers were led in scoring by Kody Jones and Korey Schwartz with 10 points each. Prescott (1-0) will be tested with three games tomorrow at the Red Rock Classic in Sedona. The first game will be against Coconino at 10:20am. The second game will be versus Winslow at 3:10pm, followed by at 5:30pm game against the tournamnet host, Sedona Red Rock .
