Badgers Sting the Yellow Jackets, 30-14

31 August 2013

Prescott hands the Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets their first regular season road loss since 2008.

The Prescott Badgers opened the season up in fine fashion and gave the home crowd what they wanted to see, a show! Senior running back Kaine Bayze picked right up where last seasons sensation Brady Mengarelli left off.

The game started out a bit sluggish as both teams punted on their first possessions. A light rain began to fall just moments into the game. The crowd appeared ready as a scattering of umbrellas decorated the home stands, as did the few faithful Yellow Jacket fans, that made the five plus hour road trip.

Blue Ridge struck first when senior Chris Johnson bolted in from 2 yards out to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-0 lead. Since the rain continued to come down and the wet conditions made the ball slick, Blue Ridge head coach Paul Moro elected to go for 2. The other running back, Nolan Cook, in the Yellow Jackets one-two punch pounded in the two point conversion giving Blue Ridge an 8-0 lead with 2:54 to play in the opening quarter.

That seemed to wake the Badgers up, as on the first play from scrimmage, after a nice 30 yard kick off return by Chris Parker, Bayze scampered 41 yards to the Yellow Jacket 29. Following a Skyler Clinton incomplete pass, Bayze, in the wildcat, darted into the end zone putting the Badgers on the scoreboard. The wet conditions created a bobbled attempt to get the ball down for the kick, leaving the Badgers trailing 8-6 with 2:22 left in the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets moved the ball right down the field with a mix of running and pass plays. The defense finally stopped the Blue Ridge offense on four plays inside the Badgers ten yard line. "The front seven, led by seniors Sterling Johnson, who had 10 tackles, Jared Tiefenthaler, Tyler Bruso, Bayze, and Clinton, did a fantastic job," said Prescott Coach Cody Collette. "They worked very hard and it paid off tonight."

The Badgers took the lead on a 4 yard run by Bayze. He added the 2 point conversion himself, following some good blocks by the offensive line.

The Badgers weathered the first half storm and led 14-8 at the half. The band and color guard went out and performed on the messy field in the rain. They did and outstanding job amidst the circumstances.

The 3rd quarter was a power struggle for field position as neither team really threatened until Johnson plowed his way into the end zone to tie the game at 14. After a Badgers punt, rain continued to fall, and despite that, Blue Ridge put the ball into the air, more and more, with very little success. Once again Coach Collette praised his defense, "Our front seven continued to put the pressure on them where they felt they had to try and throw. I can't say enough about our defense, especially in the second half."

Bayze continued to be the go-to guy as he set personal records with carries, 22, and yards, 248, and while you're at it, 2 touchdowns. The fourth quarter seemed to finally wear down Blue Ridge as Prescott kept the pressure on.

The game was still tied at 14 in the 4th, when Bayze swept around the left end for 38 yards. A Yellow Jacket personal foul moved the ball to the Blue Ridge 13. Then came a 7 yard run up the middle by Chris Wright, making it first and goal. Wright scored on a 5 yard run to give the Badgers the lead for good 21-14, with 8:26 to play.

After an exchange of punts, Blue Ridge, now trailing by seven, and pinned back inside their own 5 yard line, tried to throw out of their own end zone, which proved costly, as Tiefenthaler sacked quarterback Spencer Hall for a safety putting the Prescott up 23-14, with 2:56 to play.

Prescott received the free kick and Bayze streaked 51 yards down to the Blue Ridge 9 yard line setting up the final score.

Sterling Johnson added the final touchdown of the night going 5 yards off tackle, with 1:14 to play, giving the Badgers a 30-14 opening night win. Blue Ridge, suffering their first regular season road loss since 2008, drops to (1-1).

Next week does not get any easier as the Badgers (1-0) host power Desert Edge (1-0) from Goodyear, who won tonight at home over Liberty 49-35.
