Badgers in Phoenix

20 January 2013

Badgers win their doubleheader in Phoenix

The Prescott Badgers boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Phoenix to play in the US Airways Arena. The Lady Badgers played first and took on the Greenway Lady Demons.  Both teams struggled early offensively but it was Prescott who scored first on a drive inside by Brette Anderson. The Lady Badgers trailed only once in the game and that was 5-4 with 2:10 left in the first quarter. Anderson would give Greenway fits with her inside position and ability to glide through the lane, which helped her score a game high 22 points.

Autumn Childers was scoreless in the first half but ended up with 6 points, all scored in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Badgers led by as many as 15, up 21-6 with less than a minute to play in the 2nd quarter. Prescotts lead quickly evaporated in the 3rd quarter as the Lady Demons came out with up tempo play to create turnovers cutting the Lady Badgers lead to 25-21. They got within 3 down 29-26, then Prescott went on an 11-0 run to pull away for good. Prescott came away with a 54-46 win to improve to 17-7, while Greenway dropped to 11-6.

The boys followed the girls and played the Mingus Marauders. Prescott had beaten Mingus a couple weeks ago in overtime in Cottonwood, so we knew this one would be interesting. If you would have told head coach Adam Neely that Cam Gilbert and Tommy McMahon would end up with just 5 points between them, then he would have figured to be in trouble. Not the case. Keyshawn Liggins came off the bench to inspire the Badgers with a 10-0 run of his own, yes his own, in the 2nd quarter to lead the Badgers to a 53-46 win over Mingus.

The Badgers looked sluggish in the opening minutes scoring only 2 baskets in the 1st quarter. Free throws kept them in the game hitting 6-10 in the opening frame. Prescott led 7-5, then Mingus came alive and went on a run to go up 24-13 with 3:19 to play in the 2nd quarter.

Liggins caught fire hitting a pair of 3 pointers and 2 other inside baskets. Follow that with a last second basket by Jaran Hoover, and the Badgers had a somehwhat stunning 25-24 lead at the half.

Mingus came out on a 6-0 run to start the 3rd and led 30-25.  Jake Feingold, along with Dante Cameron, who came off the bench, ralled the Badgers to take the lead that they would have for the remainder of the game. The Badgers took that lead midway through the 3rd on a basket by Mikey Pirante. Big Cam Gilbert was frustrated by the Mingus "D", who shut him down allowing a late 4th quarter basket to the big guy. The Badgers largest lead came with only 2:44 to play up 53-44.

Prescott improved on their fine season, now with a 17-5 record, while Mingus falls to 10-13.
