PRESCOTT- As the month of November nears conclusion, the second-year Embry Riddle women’s basketball team has yet to be defeated this season and continued their impressive start on Monday night, November 27th, at home with an 86-47 victory against Bethesda University.
“We’re growing, we’re maturing and we’re having fun out there,” said Embry Riddle Eagles sophomore guard Danae Ruiz who led the team with 17 points in the win. “We worked over the summer, all of us. We came back better than what we were last year. I think that’s what helped us. We have a better mindset than last year because we were all new.”
At halftime, Embry Riddle held a 31-23 advantage and was in control for most of the half. However, Eagles Head Coach Becky Burke knew the team could be better.
“We just preached at halftime, you guys got to sit down and defend,” Burke said. “Everything that we do starts on our defensive end of the floor and we can’t let our offensive play be determined by our defense. Our defense has to set the tone for everything we do.”
The message was received loud and clear as both the offense and defense were clicking. Embry Riddle outscored Bethesda University 55-24 in the second half and soared to the victory.
“Just super proud of them,” Burke said. “The challenge is to keep them hungry and let them know that we still got to get better. We are not where we need to be yet.”
Since day one of the program in 2016, Burke has asked a lot of her players and they have responded with flying colors.
“I’ll be the first to tell you I’m not easy to play for,” Burke said. “I demand a lot out of them, not just on the floor, I demand a lot of out them in how they conduct themselves on campus, in the classroom, and the community. Just allowing me to coach them, allowing me to push them, this day in age you don’t find a group of kids that embraces that.”
The Eagles (8-0, 0-0 CALPAC) look to keep the good times rolling on the road Saturday, December 2nd, against Saint Katherine College at 7:30 pm before returning home for the opening of conference play against Benedictine University at Mesa on Thursday, December 7th, at 5:00 pm.
