Roughrider Baseball Can't Complete Sweep against Arizona Western College

The Roughrider baseball team split a doubleheader with the Matadors from Arizona Western College. YC won the first game 12-0 and dropped the second game 11-9. Yavapai is now 32-22 overall and 18-16 in the conference standings. Arizona Western is now 36-18 on the year and 18-16 in conference play.

In the opener, the Roughrider offense had 14 hits and 11 runs batted in and Avery Weems, the reigning ACCAC DI Pitcher of the Week, threw the complete game striking out 9 batters. RJ Cordeiro was 3 for 3 and Cory Wills, Carlos Viera, Caden Goldby, Jonathan Villa and Matt Mendibles each had two hits.
In the nightcap, YC could not overcome an early 7 run defecit. The Roughrider attempted a comeback in the later innings scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th only to have their comeback fall short of the right field wall off of a Cordeiro drive. Viera and Villa paced the Roughriders with two hits.

The playoffs are still within reach. YC must sweep Saturday’s doubleheader against Eastern Arizona College and South Mountain Community College must split a doubleheader with Arizona Western College. Saturday twinbill begins at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park.
