The Roughrider team split a conference doubleheader with Chandler-Gilbert Community College Tuesday afternoon in Chandler. YC dropped the first game 3-2 in extra innings and blanked the Coyotes in the nightcap, 3-0. Yavapai is now 22-16 overall and 8-10 in league play.
The first game was a pitching duel as both teams were held scoreless through the first four innings before the Riders sored a lone run in the top of the fifth inning however, Chandler-Gilbert responded with one of their own in the bottom half of the inning. In the eighth inning, RJ Cordeiro scored on a passed ball. The Coyotes tied the game up in their half of the inning. YC failed to score in the ninth but CGCC scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Reza Aleaziz was dominant on the mound as he threw 7 innings giving up two hits and 1 run while striking out 6.
Cordeiro and Jonathan Villa each 2 hits to lead the offense.
Pitching was again dominant in the second game as Avery Weems threw the complete game shutout. The Flagstaff native scattered five hits while striking out ten.
Offensively, the Roughriders only managed four hits but took advantage of Coyote miscues and walks to score three runs in the first two innings.
Yavapai plays host to Gateway Community College on Saturday, April 1st. Gateway finished 2nd at the NJCAA Division II World Series last season. Saturday’s games will begin at 12:00 PM.
