Embry Riddle Softball Splits Doubleaders on Saturday and Sunday

PRESCOTT- After picking up their first win of the season on Friday evening, the Embry Riddle Eagles softball team split doubleheaders against Menlo College on Saturday and Goshen College on Sunday.

Crooked innings would end up hurting Embry Riddle in route to a game one loss against Menlo, as the Oaks scored three runs in the second and fourth while scoring five runs in the sixth. Embry Riddle made it a game again by responding to the Oak five-run sixth by scoring four of their own but couldn’t complete the comeback as the Eagles fell 12-7.

The Oaks were led by Morgan Zimmermann who went 3-4 with a homerun and 4RBIs. Meanwhile, leadoff hitter Lauren Harrison went a perfect 4-4 while driving in two and drawing a walk.

Victoria Cervantes steadied the game out for Menlo College coming in relief for Jordan Kennedy and throwing three and one third innings giving up four hits but no runs to pick up the win.

Embry Riddle had four players pick up multi-hit games as Meghan Hospodka knocked two hits including her first homerun this season. Makenzie Hospodka, Hannah Deluna and Kaila Romero each had two hits in the defeat.

In game two, Embry Riddle used crooked innings of their own as the Eagles scored three runs in the first and fourth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead into the final three innings. The Eagles would add one additional run in the fourth and fifth inning while Kayla Avram pitched a complete game three-hit shutout to pick up the win.

Embry Riddle was led offensively by DeLuna who went a perfect 3-3 with 2RBIs while Taylor Szathmary went yard for the first time this season. Additionaly, Avram went 2-2 with the bat and scored two runs to go along with her good day on the circle.

On Sunday, Embry Riddle scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against the Goshen College Maple Leafs in game one as Olivia Ramos pitched a complete game giving up five hits and three earned runs while striking out seven in a 7-3 Eagles victory.

Romero knocked in two RBIs while going 2-3 on the day to aid in the victory.

In game two against Goshen, the Maple Leafs scored three runs in the third inning to go along with single runs in the second and fourth to build what proved to be an unsurmountable lead against Embry Riddle in a 5-2 Eagle defeat.

The Eagles (3-13, 0-0 conference) host the Copper State Collegiate Classic beginning with a triple header on Friday. At 10am, Embry Riddle takes on Eastern Arizona College with the Eagles returning to the field at noon for a matchup against Benedictine University. The final game of the day for Embry Riddle begins at 4:00pm against Arizona Western College.
