Roughriders & Eagles Hold Pre-Season Volleyball Scrimmage

17 August 2016

Even though the match didn’t count for division rankings, the women on the two local collegiate volleyball teams played hard and offered a spirited and entertaining event for the home crowd.

Embry-Riddle came to Yavapai College’s Walraven Gym Tuesday night for the annual pre-season scrimmage match between the two volleyball teams. But, just because it was a scrimmage, that doesn’t mean the ladies didn’t play hard. More than once the games were tied or within just a couple of points of each other.

The Yavapai College Roughrider Ladies are coming off their first ever District Championships as they went to the Nationals last season. They hope to match or exceed that accomplishment in 2016.

The Roughriders volleyball team is ranked #20 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in the 2016 pre-season rankings. According to Yavapai College Athletic Director Brad Clifford, this, “…marks only the third time that Yavapai College Volleyball has received a pre-season ranking position.”

"In 2011, Yavapai was #2- in the pre-season, and in 2010, YC was #24,” Clifford explained. “The ranking is the first time that the Roughriders have been in the poll since October 17, 2012 when they reached the #19 position. Three times last year, Yavapai received votes but did not crack the top 20.”

The Roughrider ladies will play Mesa Community College in Mesa on Wednesday, August 24th, after which they head to the Coyote Classic in Las Vegas starting on Friday. Their first home game is on Thursday, September 1 against Eastern Arizona College at 7 PM.

The Embry-Riddle Eagles are coming off a great season of their own, when they went 20-10 in 2015. This was their best season ever, and they are reaching for an even better season this year.

The 2016 season starts soon, as the ladies head to Denver on Thursday for a tournament over the weekend in which they will play Loyola University; the University of Montana-Western; Johnson & Wales University and John Brown University.

The Eagles first home match will be on Saturday, August 27 against Arizona Christian University at 3 PM.
