The Softball Team has Climbed into 2nd Place in the ACCAC Division I Race

The Roughrider softball team moved into a tie for second place in the ACCAC Division I race Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over Glendale Community College, 8-0 and 16-6. The sweep and an Arizona Western College split propel the Riders into that two-spot, one game out of first place. YC is now 43-11 overall and 35-9 in conference action.

A seven-run explosion in the fourth inning lifted the Green and Gold to the 8-0 win in the opener.

YC scored in the fourth on an RBI single by Karissa Pena, an RBI single by Savana Ramirez, an RBI single by Lynea Klemmedson, a three-run single by Nicole Matta, and an RBI single by Jocilyn Ellis.

Andrea Sotelo paced the Riders at the plate. Sotelo, this week’s conference DI Player of the Week, went 1 for 3, drove in one and scored one run. She homered in the first inning.

The reigning ACCAC DI Pitcher of the Week, Amy Robinson, kept the Gauchos off the scoreboard for all five innings. She pitched a shutout, allowing no opposing players to cross the plate on five hits while ringing up seven. In the nightcap, Yavapai jumped out to an early lead on Glendale CC and captured a 16-6 victory.

Ten runs in the first three innings allowed the Lady Riders to put the game away early. An RBI single by Mayhina Chong in the first inning and an RBI single by Nicole Matta, a fielder's choice, and a three-run home run by Dustie Durham during the second inning fueled the Roughrider offense early.

The teams traded runs for most of the contest, leading to five lead changes in the game.

YC hit three home runs in the win. Additional home runs came when Andrea Sotelo in the third inning and Karissa Pena in the fifth inning.

Durham got the win for the Riders. She allowed three runs over four innings. She struck out one, walked none and surrendered six hits.

The YC batters easily handled Glendale pitching as six hitters combined for 13 hits, 14 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

The top of the first saw YC take an early lead, 1-0.

It didn't take long for Glendale to respond as it scored two runs of its own in the first.

The Roughriders tacked on another four runs in the third. A clutch sacrifice fly scored Pena to open the scoring in the frame. That was followed up by Andrea Sotelo's three-run blast, scoring Sarah Ingegneri and Jocilyn Ellis.

Yavapai brought home three runs in the fourth inning, and matched that run total in the fifth. In the fourth, YC scored on an RBI single by Lynea Klemmedson, scoring Sydney Forray.

Yavapai plays their final home regular season doubleheader on Tuesday, April 26th. The Lady Roughriders entertain South Mountain Community College. Last month, the Lady Riders blanked the Cougars, 9-0 and 16-0. Tuesday’s games will begin at 12:00 PM.
