On a windy, blustery day at Roughrider Park, the Yavapai College baseball team swept an ACCAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon over the visiting Bears from Phoenix College, 7-6 and 18-3. YC is now 23-10 on the season and 10-3 in conference play. Phoenix College falls to 12-21 overall and 7-13 in conference action.
Yavapai had to come from behind in the opener and then hold on in the end to secure the victory.
The opponent score two runs in the first inning and YC used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead for good. Phoenix scored two runs in their half of the seventh inning to cut the lead to one before Nicko Ortega came on to put the fire out.
Nate Easley and Brock Ephan each homered. Nikko Delgado was 2 for 3 with 2 runs knocked in. Turtle Kuhaulua, Ryan Oberg, Ephan and Easley each had two hits.
Chase Beal threw 4.2 innings striking out 5 and scattering four hits for the victory. Ortega threw the final inning for the save.
In the second game, the Roughriders scored 11 runs in the opening frame to cruise to the 18-3 victory. Yavapai had home runs from Kuhaulua, Oberg, Gavin Johns and Ephan. Johns was 3 for 4 with 5 runs batted in. Oberg was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI’s. Easley, Ephan and Ramsey Romano each had two hits.
Avery Weems threw four innings to earn the victory. He allowed 3 hits and struck out 3.
Yavapai returns to the diamond on Friday, March 25th at Scottsdale Community College for a single nine-inning game. YC returns home on Saturday, march 26th to host Scottsdale in a single nine-inning game. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
