YCSO Detention Officer Arrested for Assault with a Deadly Weapon

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Detention Officer was arrested for Aggravated Assault and other charges.

davidashtonOn January 3, 2009, Prescott Police Officers arrested 43-year-old David Ashton for 3 counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, 1 count of Recklessly Handling a Weapon and 1 count of Carrying Deadly Weapon in a Public Establishment. Ashton is currently employed as a Detention Officer with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 1:35 A.M., Prescott Police responded to the report of a man with a gun call at Moctezuma's Bar, 144 S. Montezuma Street. Officers arrived and were eventually directed to the city parking garage where Ashton was located and arrested without incident. A handgun was also recovered.

During the investigation, officers learned that Ashton had an initial confrontation with patrons inside Matt's Saloon, 112 S. Montezuma Street. Ashton brandished a knife during the confrontation and was escorted out of the bar.

Officers were also contacted by an 18-year-old male who had been assaulted by Ashton after the incident at Matt's Saloon. This victim and several witnesses had seen Ashton exit the Bird Cage Saloon, 148 S. Montezuma Street, and shove his way through the crowd outside. When the victim approached Ashton about his behavior and confrontation with a man standing nearby, Ashton turned and pointed a handgun at the victim's forehead. He also struck the side of the victim's head with the firearm. After the assault, Ashton began waiving the firearm in the crowd and ultimately pointed the weapon at 2 Moctezuma's employees. Ashton then left the area while police were being notified and was eventually caught in the parking garage as mentioned.

Ashton was booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center on the indicated charges and remains in-custody on a $150,000 bond. YCSO has placed Ashton on unpaid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
