Arizona State Senate LD-1 Race Decided

The unofficial final results in the Arizona State Senate LD-1 race are in. Ken Bennett has won by 256 votes over Steve Zipperman. Technically this result is unofficial until the Yavapai County Board of Supervisor does a canvass of the results on Monday. However, all votes have been counted. There have no changes in the vote totals since Wednesday evening.

The unofficial final results show Ken Bennett with 28,357 votes (50.2%) and Steve Zipperman with 28,101 (49.8%).

[Editor’s note: Prescott eNews has permission to reprint Mr. Zipperman’s statement on the election results. The following reflects the statement in full.]

To each member of the Zipperman Campaign and its supporters: As we all know, the primary election is now over. Despite heroic efforts by our team, it appears that we lost by 259  (Ed: 256)  votes or by about 0.4% (less than half a percent). So close, but oh so far away!

Many of you have encouraged me to continue fighting for the LD-1 Senate seat. As you know, I’m a fighter and I don’t give up easily. Yes we know that there were many irregularities in the primary election. Unfortunately, after extensive evaluation of our situation, we must be realistic, accept that this fight cannot be won, and move on with our lives.

A major part of my campaign has been dedicated to significantly reforming our election laws and procedures. As a free society, we need to be able to trust our elections, and their results. Unfortunately, most of us have little faith in the results of our elections, so the fight for election integrity must continue! As Arizonans and as Americans, we cannot sit back and accept our broken system in its current form. We must change the way our elections are conducted!

Even though I won’t personally be working in the legislature, I will continue the fight to restructure our elections, and the laws impacting them. As citizens, it is our responsibility to see that our officials cleanse our voter rolls and improve our election laws and procedures.

Many of you have signed on to help the We the People Alliance in its effort to find and remove illegal voters from our voting rolls. I encourage you to continue that fight. As watchful citizens, we need to oversee and actively support the new leadership in our legislature while they revise many of our existing election laws. For example, penalties for those found guilty of violating our election laws should be enhanced, commensurate with the extreme nature of these crimes. Rest assured, even though I won’t be an elected official soon, I will continue to remain actively involved as our fight for election integrity continues.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and thank you for all that you have done to support me and my campaign. We did have an impact. My opponent ran as a conservative Republican. Because the voters are so evenly split, if he doesn’t keep his word, he will be a one term Senator. Please remain vigilant to protect the interests of “We the People.”

Finally, the General election this November requires that Republican candidates be elected throughout our State government. We cannot allow the Democrats to gain one inch, so please rally behind all Republican candidates and support them in the General Election. We must remain united in our conservative focus!

  1. This LD-1 contest was the hardest local race I have had to deal with. After 19 years as a resident and having been in elected offices, I knew Ken Bennett but Steve Zipperman, well, he was new on the scene. However as time passed I observed a well educated, successful businessman in real estate and law who was involved in his community and as a Prescott resident, was teaching the constitution with his wife in our community. Steve appeared naive on the issue of our local Central Arizona Fire-Medical Authority building an ambulance service verses private service being a preferred, less costly service for the taxpayer (us)! However, Mr. Zipperman was not favoring CAFMA but rather collecting information for a reasoned position to take. Hopefully, Steve will pursue better more efficient government as an activist and be prepared to take the political plunge at a later time. Thanks to Steve and his wife for a valiant effort.

  2. An absolutely classless concession speech. Here in Arizona, we congratulate the winner (Senator Bennett) by name and wish him well for the benefit of our state and the people of LD-1.
No such thing here. Rather we hear of the “many irregularities in the primary election” and a virtual taunt to Sen. Bennett. (Reminiscent of Stacy Abrams when she lost in Georgia.)

The true measure of a man is how he handles defeat. Mr. Zipperman failed miserably in this regard.
