Man Dies From Self-Inflicted, Accidental Gunshot

Man deceased from Apparent Accidental, Self-Inflicted, Gunshot

Preliminary information – case remains active – 

On January 23, 2020, around 3 PM, deputies were dispatched to an area off Orme Road, approximately 1 mile from Highway 169, Dewey, regarding a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. When deputies arrived, they contacted the caller who reported finding the victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Before deputies arrived, the victim told the caller that he shot himself accidentally. 

Paramedics arrived and stabilized the injured man pending transfer by helicopter to a Phoenix area hospital. A few hours later, deputies were notified that the 58-year-old man died during surgery at the hospital. 

Before being airlifted, a deputy attempted to find out from the victim what had happened. The victim stated he shot himself accidently. 

Deputies secured the scene and recovered a handgun from the victim’s truck parked about 40 feet away from where the victim was found. It is believed to be the handgun involved. There is no indication at this time that anyone else was present at the time of the shooting. 

The incident remains under active investigation to gain further information on the victim’s background and timeline of events for the day. 

His identity will be released once next of kin notification has been confirmed.
