Eldergrow™ Blooms at Touchmark at The Ranch

Residents at Touchmark at the Ranch can scratch their gardening itch.

Nationwide gardening program comes to Prescott, offering indoor enrichment year-round PRESCOTT, Ariz. — No longer will bouts of extreme heat or cold spells prevent residents living at Touchmark at The Ranch from spending quality time with nature. The full-service retirement community just launched its new Eldergrow program on Thursday, November 14. The indoor garden program serves as an ongoing fulfilling activity for residents as they tend to the flowers and plants, smell the herbs and connect with previous hobbies they enjoyed.

Touchmark at The Ranch residents Rose Salido (left) and Leonora Force place flowers, vegetables, herbs and other plants in the new Eldergrow indoor garden, the first in Prescott.

Touchmark is the first location in the Prescott area and among the first statewide to partner with Eldergrow and offer this unique experience.

A national organization, Eldergrow provides therapeutic gardening classes to older adults, allowing them to improve their physical, cognitive and social skills as they work hands-on in one of Eldergrow’s mobile indoor gardens.

Reactions from residents were enthusiastic. “You can really see the interest in making plants grow and seeing them mature,” said Nev Willett. “The possibilities of what we can grow and the flowers we can arrange is a great benefit!” Rose Salido and Katherine “Lou” Duncan agree, with both adding how much they “love” the plants; Leonora Force is thrilled the garden is just steps from her home.

The new Eldergrow garden at Touchmark at The Ranch brings indoors the many benefits of gardening year-round to residents. Touchmark is the first location in the Prescott area and among the first statewide to partner with Eldergrow and offer this unique experience.

Twice a month, Master Gardener and Eldergrow Educator Lora Goulding will work with residents and lead a culinary or craft activity incorporating the plants and highlighting one or more of the five senses: sight, smell, touch, sound and taste. She points out that because gardening connects with people’s senses, it is an especially enriching activity.

Ashley James, Touchmark’s Life Enrichment/Wellness Director, is excited about all of the possibilities. “Touchmark is incorporating Eldergrow into our Full Life Wellness & Life Enrichment™ programming because we have seen firsthand the wellness benefits it offers. Many people enjoy gardening, and the Eldergrow program offers creative indoor options to enjoy gardening’s benefits,” she says.
