Around 1:45 pm Friday afternoon fire engines from Prescott Fire Department and Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) responded to reports of a vehicle that drove off of the overpass at the intersection of SR89 and SR89A. Three engines and a battalion chief responded to the call. Prescott Fire Department’s Battalion 1 was the first arriving unit and found two vehicles with heavy damage. The first vehicle was a full size pickup truck that witnesses stated was traveling east bound on SR89A when it entered the median and landed on an SUV below that was traveling southbound on SR89. Prescott Fire Engine 74 attempted to treat the lone occupant of the truck, an elderly male, as he had suffered multi-systems trauma in the impact. CAFMA Engine 59 stabilized the truck so crews could safely operate in and around the vehicle.
Prescott Fire Engine 73 extricated and rendered aid to the lone occupant of the SUV.
While the driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and was transported by Life Line ambulance to Yavapai Regional Medical Center, the male in the truck succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on scene.
Southbound traffic on SR89 was closed for approximately two hours while the Department of Public Safety conducted their investigation.
