Update: The deceased driver has been identified as 18-year-old Caitlyn Smiddy from Upland, California - her family has been notified. The Sheriff's Office expresses our condolences to Caitlyn's family and friends.
PRELIMINARY INFORMATION - Just after 1:30 AM this morning, deputies were dispatched to a rollover collision on Williamson Valley Road at mile maker 3, outside of Prescott, Arizona.
The vehicle involved, a red Saturn station wagon, left the roadway and came to rest in a ditch. The driver was ejected and suffered fatal injuries when the vehicle landed on the driver. A passenger in the vehicle escaped with minor injuries. Following the collision, deputies learned that friends of the occupants aided the passenger to safety and also attempted to lift the car off the driver, but were unsuccessful.
Before the collision, witnesses indicated the Saturn was driving at high speed and had passed another vehicle before going into a skid. The driver reportedly overcorrected and slid of the roadway into the ditch as the vehicle rolled.
Deputies are also attempting the determine if another vehicle played a role in the collision. This vehicle and its driver have been identified and contacted and the investigation is underway to determine if the driver’s actions contributed to the collision.
A collision reconstruction team has been on site since early this morning interviewing the involved parties, witnesses, and gathering evidence. Cause remains under review.
