Local Teams All Fall In First Week of Action

Prescott at Desert Edge

Badgers push Desert Edge but fall 34-24

The Prescott Badgers came to play their first game of the season against the Desert Edge Scorpions, and it showed. Despite the 34-24 loss, Prescott showed that they could play with an accomplished program.

The Badgers took the opening kickoff and moved down the field to the Desert Edge 25. Facing a fourth and one, the Badgers rolled the dice coming up with a first down setting up their first touchdown of the season. Sylas Espitia punched the ball in from one yard out, and when Clay Gross added the extra point, the Badgers led 7-0.

The lead was extremely short lived as Jihad Marks bolted 95 yards on the kickoff return to tie the game 7-7.

Prescott came back to take the lead when Sam Giordan scored on a 5 yard run, making it was 14-7. The Scorpions came within one at 14-13, on a 40 yard TD reception by Keith McKaney from Adryan Lara.

The Badgers were forced to punt and the short kick set the Scorpions up at the Prescott 35. A couple of plays later, Aaron Greene came up with a big fumble recovery, giving the ball back to the Badgers.

The Scorpions held and got the ball back, but a bad snap on a punt by the home team, gave the Badgers a big opportunity at the Desert Edge 10 yard line.

Prescott had to settle for a Clay Gross 25 yard field goal, giving the Badgers a 17-13 lead.

When Adryan Lara hit Jihad Marks on a 16 yard scoring strike, Desert Edge had their first lead at 20-17 with 5:33 left in the second quarter. The Badgers had a chance before the break, but Boyd's pass was picked off at the Scorpion 20 to end the half.

Desert Edge scored first in the second half on 55 yard pass from Adryan Lara to Jihad Marks to push their lead to 27-17 with 9:53 in the third.

After Prescott gave up the ball, it was the Badger defense, taking yet another stand, stopping Desert Edge offense at the Prescott 5 yard line.

Prescott went 95 yards on their next scoring drive, capped off by Brayden Nelson hauling in a 63 yard pass from Boyd to get the Badgers within three. Prescott trailed 27-24 with just over a minute left in the third quarter. The Scorpions extended their lead to double digits again on a two yard run by Isabien Ramos with just over a minute left in the third quarter.

Neither team managed any points in the final quarter, although the Scorpions took a knee to run out the clock at the Badger one.

Desert Edge will pay a visit to Moon Valley next week.Prescott (0-1) will host Canyon del Oro next Friday at Ken Lindley Field, aka, City Park at 7pm.

Estrella Foothills at Bradshaw Mountain

Bears lets one slip away

The Estella Foothills Wolves rallied with two fourth quarter touchdowns to beat the Bradshaw Mountain Bears 33-26 last night at Bob Pavlich Field in Prescott Valley.

The Bears took a first quarter lead and led till the Wolves took advantage of a Bradshaw Mountain turnover midway through the fourth quarter, setting up the winning score.

The Bears looked good from the start forcing Estrella Foothills to punt on their opening possession. Bradshaw Mountain went neatly the distance of the field, with Titus King punching the ball into the end zone, and when Josh Grant added the PAT, the Bears led 7-0.

Estrella Foothills responded when quarterback Ty Perry rolled to his weak side, then fired the ball across to the other side to a wide open Nathaniel Villanueva, who strolled into the end zone. The failed extra point kept the Bears in front 7-6 with 4:21 left in the opening quarter.

After Josh Grant added a 37 yard field goal to make it 10-6, the Bears Daniel Gobiel came up with a Ty Perry tipped pass in the second quarter, rolling 25 yards to extend the Bradshaw Mountain lead to 16-6 with 11:03 in the second quarter.

The Wolves worked their way down the field in the final minutes of the first half to get within 16-12, on Ty Perry scrambled his way around the Bears defense to score from 16 yards out.

The Bears came out in the second half to extend the lead to 23-12 at the 4:37 mark, on a Titus King two yard run.  Estrella Foothills just managed to stick around though, answering their opponents score yet again.

Ty Perry drilled Jacob Marsh on a slant pattern to pull the Wolves with 23-19 with 3:35 left in the third quarter.

Bradshaw Mountain moved the ball, but had to settle for a 23 yard field goal from Grant with 8:33 left in the contest. Those would turn out to be the final Bear points of the night.

The Wolves tailback Kenny Abraham went off tackle for a 30 yard run to pull the visitors to within one, at 26-25. A missed extra point kept the score that way with 6:48 left.

A huge turnover followed that on the kickoff, when Ismael Solano received the ball and came charging up the middle of the field, taking a couple of hard hits in the process, forcing the ball loose, that was recovered by the Wolves. Abraham took the ball and scored on a 9 yard run to give Estrella Foothills their first lead of the night. Parry hit Marsh for the two point conversion to make it 33-26 with 4:40 left.

Bradshaw Mountain had the ball twice in the final minutes, but a pass interception in the final seconds sealed the deal for the Wolves.

The Bears (0-1) will host Shadow Mountain (0-0) next Friday at 7pm. Estrella Foothills will host Greenway next Friday at 7pm.
