04 August 2019

Listen to Quang Nguyen talk about what it means to be a legal immigrant, and finally, an American citizen.

Includes video of Quang and Dwayne LaSassier singing, "I'm Proud To Be An American".

Editor's Note: About 10 years ago Quang Nguyen spoke at a Freedom Rally and shared some of his story as an immigrant from Vietnam. This week, Quang has announced his candidacy for Arizona State Representative, Legislative District 1. We thought it would be great to go back in time and listen to Quang at the Freedom Rally.

In July, 2010, a Freedom Rally was held in Prescott Valley at the Entertainment District. ...The speaker who really touched the hearts of those in the crowd was a local immigrant from Vietnam: Quang Nguyen.

As people wiped tears from their eyes, he explained how he came from Vietnam, not knowing if he'd ever see his parents or siblings again. He spoke of how he felt the first time he recited the Pledge of Allegiance as a citizen of the United States.

One thing that shone the most clearly from his face, was the pride he has as a legal American citizen. Yes, it was difficult, and there were many requirements, but to Nguyen, it was all worthwhile.

Against the backdrop of protesters walking behind the crowd with large signs about SB 1070, Nguyen told his story:

After he was done speaking, it just seemed fitting to hear Dwayne LaSassier sing, "I'm Proud to Be An American".
