The Whiskey Off-Road is Here!

26 April 2019

Welcome to all bike racers and fans! It's time for the Fat Tire Crit!

It's that annual event, where pros mix with amateurs, bikes combine with music and the whole city comes together with cowbells. It's the Whiskey Off-Road Bike Race!

The thing about watching a mountain bike race is that most people gather together for the start, rattling their cowbells (you do have your cowbells ready, don’t you?) at the passing bike riders, and then wait. Depending on the length of the race, whether 15, 30 or 50 Proof, as in the Whiskey Off-Road Races, the wait can be two or three hours until the first riders come dashing in to the sound of more cowbells for that final winning sprint to the finish.

But, it’s not like that with the El Yucateco Pro Fat Tire Crit races for ladies and men. These are races where you can get up close and personal with the riders as they scream by, completing several mile-long laps before the winners are announced. The Criterium races, for Pros only, don’t take much longer than 20 minutes each; think uphill, downhill, bunched together, riding really, really fast.

However, the Crits are important, because the finish determines who gets the front starting positions in Sunday’s Pro race, enhancing their opportunity to come home with a fat check at the end of the day. There is also a cash prize for the Crit race, which is something new this year.

One thing to be aware of, though, is that parking will be strictly limited during this race. You’ll see lots of blocked-off parking spaces downtown, starting at 1 PM, so come early and scout out your spot. Hint: Try the Parking Garage on Granite Street. It’s just a short block or so away.
