Chino Valley Man Arrested for Abuse of 4-Month Old

13 July 2018   Lt. Vince Schaan

On July 12, 2018 at about 4:30pm Chino Valley Police were contacted by Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) to report they were treating a 4 month old baby boy at their facility who had symptoms of extreme abuse. YRMC was treating and preparing the baby to be flown, via helicopter, to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for advanced medical care. The nature of the injuries to the baby were not just single incident injuries. The injuries learned after scans of the brain showed multiple brain bleeds both old and new.

Investigators began conducting interviews. The interviews included Lifeline Ambulance crews, Central Arizona Fire and Medical Crews (CAFMA), who initially treated and transported the child as well as hospital staff and a brief interview with mom.

Initial information indicates the 4 month old baby is cared for by his mother, except when she goes to work during the day to support her, the baby and her brother who is the baby’s uncle. While the mother is working full time to provide for her family she entrusted the care of the baby to her brother. The mothers brother and baby’s uncle was identified as 26 year old Chino Valley resident Taylor Marrs.

On July 12th Taylor brought the child to the mothers work after the child was experiencing some medical issues. The mother rushed the baby to the nearest fire department to seek emergency medical care for her baby where CAFMA and Lifeline crews began the lifesaving care before transitioning the care to YRMC.

Taylor Marrs was interviewed by a Chino Valley Detective where he initially denied causing any harm to the baby. After the experienced detective continued the interview, Taylor Marrs admitted to causing injury to the baby on multiple occasions. Details of the injuries over the several weeks included striking the baby, shoving bottles into his mouth causing bruising, choking, smothering and even shaking the baby. The assault of the 4 month old on July 12th, included the smothering, choking and shaking which resulted in the baby losing consciousness, stopping to breath and going into seizure like activities.

The great work by the medical crews of CAFMA, Lifeline, YRMC and Phoenix Children’s Hospital have resulted in the child’s condition being currently listed as stable. Chino Valley Police Department continues to investigate this matter and is working with the Department of Child Services. We are continuing contact with Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the great medical staff tasked with caring for this little baby. As updates are provided to us on the baby’s condition we will continue to provide those updates.

Taylor Marrs was booked into YCSO Jail on 1 count of Child Abuse, 6 counts of Aggravated Assault. The matter will be referred to the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office for review and formal charging.
