PRESCOTT—Elliot Alford, an immigration lawyer with offices in Flagstaff and Camp Verde, will speak about the Dreamers’ Act and its potential to be rescinded at the Yavapai County Democratic Party meeting Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Adult Center of Prescott, 1280 E. Rosser St. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m., but Alford will speak at 6:15.
Alford, a longtime legal advocate for undocumented people, has spent a career helping them with obtaining citizenship and navigating the complicated immigration documentation legal arena.
On Sept. 1, the President announced that in six months he would be rescinding the 2012 Presidential Executive order to protect children who were raised in the United States without documentation, some as old as in their 30s. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, was meant as a stopgap measure until Congress passed a more permanent solution. Instead, no action has been taken for the past five years. Now Trump has said he wants Congress to pass legislation that would address their rights, but might revisit DACA in six months if they have not.
Alford will tell the audience what they can do to help Dreamers and what Dreamers can do to protect themselves in the meantime.
The meeting will also feature Holbrook Mayor Bobby Tyler, who is running for the State Senate in Legislative District 6, and Wade Carlisle, who is running for the State House in LD6, as well as local candidates for Legislative District 1, which encompasses most of Yavapai County. They include: Ana Maria Perez, who has filed to run for Congress in Congressional District 4, which includes Yavapai County; Jo Craycraft, Prescott resident and candidate for State Senate; and Jan Manolis, Prescott resident and candidate for State House.
Donations are requested to attend. Please contact the Yavapai County Democratic Headquarters at (928) 541-0413 for more information.
