Speaking from France, where he is attending a climate change summit, Brown spoke about the shooting in San Bernardino, calling it a terrorist attack. However, he didn’t seem to think that stricter gun control laws were the answer, according to the Sacramento Bee account.
“California has some of the toughest gun control laws of any state,” Brown is reported as saying. “And Nevada and Arizona are wide open, so that’s a gigantic back door through which any terrorist can walk,” he continued.
According to authorities, the guns used in the shooting were purchased legally in California before being modified.
Governor Doug Ducey and other political leaders from Arizona were quick to issue public statements in response.
Statement From Governor Doug Ducey Regarding Comments By Governor Jerry Brown:
PHOENIX - "All of Arizona mourns for the victims in California. To politicize a tragedy of this magnitude and use it as an opportunity to attack our state is out of bounds. Not only will we be ignoring Gov. Brown's advice, but I call on him to retract his incredibly thoughtless and ill-advised comments.”

"California Governor Becomes Irrational--Gov. Ducey Sets Him Straight
"In a fit of irrationality California Gov. Brown all but blamed Arizona for the Muslim terrorist attack in San Bernardino. Even though those were California grown terrorists. This is an example of delusion that becomes dangerous quickly. Although California has some of the strictest gun control (people control?) laws in the country somehow murderous terrorists just don't seem to care. Who would have thunk it?
"The Second Amendment is a core civil right. I will defend always. And let Gov. Ducey know you got his back. I do."
Former Governor Jan Brewer - Facebook
"With the horrific act of terrorism that happened in San Bernardino, I am absolutely appalled at California Governor Jerry Brown's comments attacking Arizona.
"For those who missed Governor Brown's misguided comments, he said the following: "California has some of the toughest gun control laws of any state. And Nevada and Arizona are wide open, so that’s a gigantic back door through which any terrorist can walk."
"Instead of offering up thoughts and prayers to the victims, Gove rnor Brown's misplaced attacks on Arizona are simply unnecessary.
"Tonight, my prayers are with the victims and for their families as well as the entire San Bernardino community during this difficult time.
"I also pray for leadership across our great nation."
