The Prescott Regulators & Their Shady Ladies have done it again – and we’re not referring to their penchant for donning colorful frontier-era regalia and dazzling visitors to Prescott’s historic downtown.

The old-west re-enactment group has deposited another $10,000 into the Yavapai College Foundation Veterans, Military and Family Fund. Group members established the fund in 2016 to help student veterans and their families pursue life-lifting education and career training at YC.

The contribution marks the second straight year the now 20-year-old Prescott Regulators & Their Shady Ladies have added $10,000 to the scholarship fund – the largest amount since its inception. The money is generated from fees for group appearances at public and private events, through generous business sponsorships and from tips collected while members serve as volunteer hosts for downtown Prescott gatherings.

The money contributed by the Prescott Regulators & Their Shady Ladies is a game-changer for student veterans who come up short funding their college journeys, said Mary Talosi, executive director of the Yavapai College Foundation. “The scholarship money is put into the hands of veterans every year by our financial aid office. That’s the beauty of their scholarship. It takes care of immediate needs.”

Paige Phares, president of the Prescott Regulators & Their Shady Ladies, said group members are inspired by the letters of thanks and the success stories they receive from scholarship recipients. “We love their letters so much. Their stories reaffirm all the work we’re doing.”

Along with helping student veterans succeed, the mission of the Prescott Regulators & Their Shady Ladies is keeping the history of early Prescott alive – specifically the “wild west” years between 1866 and 1892. In 2008, the group was named the “Official Old West Ambassadors for the City of Prescott.” The group is sought after for living history lessons at area schools, for parades and community events, and for private parties and weddings.

Many of the group’s original founders were World’s Oldest Rodeo volunteers. More recent volunteers are drawn to the group by a love of Prescott’s early history and the chance to relive it.
