Opinion: Individual versus Group Responsibility

14 June 2020   Buz Williams

Each individual is responsible for their own action.

The left wing progressives, woke elites, media, academia and politicians are totally against individual responsibility. It is a whole lot easier to play the blame game if you don't have facts, evidence or the truth on your side. It is much simpler for progressive politicians and media to explain away the high crime rate in minority areas as the result of “systemic racism”, than to admit that their policies have decimated the nuclear family in those communities.

In the mid 1960s, President Johnson's War on Poverty made it much more financially advantageous for a single woman with children to live without a wage earning man in the house. As a result, millions of children grew up without fathers. Boys and young men without fathers are much more statistically likely to commit crime than those who have fathers in the home. Still, a lot of boys from families without fathers do not commit crimes. That is why we only arrest, try and incarcerate those that do break the law.

Ronald Reagan once said, “We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to return to the American precept that each individual is accountable for his own action.” Leftists, socialist, communists and Democrats reject any such idea that is logical, reasoned and encompasses common sense. It is much less difficult for them to blame the high rate of black imprisonment on systemic racism than to blame it on the individual black lawbreakers or their so-called progressive policies that caused the demise of the black family unit. These social experiments have negatively effected all poor people regardless of race.

The so-called social justice warriors like to say that minority poverty, low scholastic achievement and any other measurable deficiency is a consequence of “white privilege”, but as author, scholar, and talk show host, Denis Prager once pointed out, “There is no such thing as white privilege, only two parent privilege.” To the agenda driven left progressives, the idea that any black, woman, homosexual, transgender or any other minority is responsible for his or her own antisocial or criminal actions, is passe. They assign responsibility to society, specifically the white race majority or systemic racism, however they define it.. That sure sounds like the antithesis of Dr. Martin Luther King's ideal of judging a person by the content of his character rather than the color of his skin.

There are consequences to reassigning responsibility for one's actions away from the individual to a group. First it relieves the individual of the use of his or her conscience because the crimes are the system's, society's or racism's fault. This leads to more antisocial and/or criminal behavior because no matter what crime that individual crook commits, it is not his responsibility.

Next, the group which gets the blame, has done nothing to feel guilty about, except be a member of the group the elite left wing wants to assign accountability, whether to the white majority, the rich or whoever. When a white Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd by kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes, the left wing cartel not only wanted to assign guilt to the police officers involved, they wanted to lay responsibility on all law enforcement across the country.

On a Facebook page I read, an individual made the most profound observation on the subject of individual versus group responsibility: “There are good plumbers and there are bad plumbers. No one blames the good plumbers, if a bad plumber does a crumby job.”
