St Patrick was a 4th century priest credited with the conversion of the Irish to Christianity. His feast day is March 17, and even though it usually falls during Lent, Lenten restrictions on food and alcoholic drinks were normally lifted for the day. Although the day has always been marked in Ireland. It became a major American holiday in the early 1900’s. Around 2 million Irish immigrated to the U.S. between 1820 and 1890.
Many of the foods we associate with St. Patricks Day were not everyday foods eaten by the Irish in Ireland. Beef consumption, for example was low as beef was very expensive. Many Irish dishes are based on lamb, pork, potatoes, cabbage, and oatmeal. Here are a few you might like to try.
