Sales, Menus & Recipes: Senior Discount Day!
Featured

03 October 2018

Today is Senior Discount Day! 10% off at Fry's and Safeway.

Wednesday (today!) is Senior Discount Day at Fry’s and Safeway; shoppers over age 55 get 10% off their purchase. This is offered the 1st Wednesday of every month.

The grocery store discount is well known, but many other local businesses also give seniors a break. GoodWill and St Vincent de Paul both have Senior discount programs as do Ace Hardware, Ross and Kohl’s. Even some rug cleaners give senior discounts.

Some businesses also give Military and First Responder discounts. The thing about these discounts is that usually you have to ask! So next time the cashier is ringing up your purchases ask, “Do you give any senior  (or other) discounts?” Maybe they do!

Special Sales this Week

Fry’s—First Wednesday Senior Day

Safeway—There are many many Just for U savings in this ad, on items from shampoo to steak.  So if you do digital coupons, be sure to check out the ad.

Sprouts—The sales on organic products continue. There is a  72 hour sale, Fri, Sat & Sun with strawberries at $.98 and $3.99 lb. for thick-sliced smoked bacon.

Apple of the Week—Gala

The Gala apple is not a newcomer, but it has many qualities which help it remain popular year after year. It is frequently on sale, not surprising as it is now the most planted apple in the U.S. (Tuck that piece of knowledge away for your next trivia game.) The Gala has Golden Delicious as one parent and was first produced in New Zealand in the 1930’s. It was brought to the U.S. by Stark Bros nursery and patented in 1974. It is now the most popular apple in the U.S., having recently dethroned the  Red Delicious.

The Gala is overall orange, with some striping. It is sweet but aromatic with finely textured flesh, very good in salads, a good cooker and especially good in sauces.

National Days

Oct 3Caramel Custard Day
Oct 4Taco Day (not just one recipe, but more than 50!)
Oct 5Apple Betty Day
Oct 6Noodle Day
Oct 7Frappe Day
Oct 8Fluffernutter Day
Oct 9Moldy Cheese Day

OK, so Saturday October 7 is National Frappe Day. What, exactly is a frappe? For starters it’s pronounced fra-pay and it’s an iced drink that has been shaken, beaten, or blended to make it foamy. Although it is usually a coffee drink it can have any number of different flavors. The frappe was invented in Greece  in 1957 at an international trade fair. It is still a very popular drink in Greece, where it is made with instant coffee.

The more common version in America is made with espresso. The defining characteristic of a frappe is the foaminess. Since it needs to be very smooth and have some foam, a blender is the processor of choice. So Now You Know.

But what remains unknowable is why it's national day should be in October instead of July.

Recipe: Beet and Bean Salad

A great fall salad & adds protein.

16 oz jar sliced pickled beets
15 oz can canellini beans, drained and rinsed
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup chopped red onion, or green onion including tops, or chopped shallots
10 oz bag of lettuce or equivalent
1/2 cup basil pesto
1/2 cup crumbled bacon
1/4 t ground black pepper

Drain beets reserving 1/2 cup liquid. In large bowl combine beans, celery and onion. Add lettuce, toss. Add beets.
In a small saucepan, cook and stir beet liquid, pesto, bacon and pepper until very warm.
Add to salad, toss gently. Serve immediately

To Try:

  • Instead of lettuce,  use cooked potatoes and carrots.
  • Add avocado chunks
  • Sprinkle with blue cheese

Fluffernutted (Oct. 8 is Fluffernutter Day)

So here are some ways you can trick up your fluffernutter sandwich:

  • Use decent bread, try cinnamon raisin
  • Add banana slices
  • Broil (toast, brown) the fluff side (let cool before putting together with PB side)
  • Add a layer of Nutella over the PB
  • Add a layer of jam
  • Sprinkle in some granola
  • If you really like fluffernutter, try this!
