Sales, Menus & Recipes: Sandwiches Galore!
Featured

01 August 2018

August is Sandwich Month and Peaches Month

Remember August 1 is Senior Discount Day at Fry’s and Safeway. Most items are 10%off for folks age 55 and over. But have you ever looked to see what things are not subject to the discount. Well I hadn’t either, but now I have. At Safeway, some are what you might expect. No discount on liquor or tobacco products. Or on stamps or lottery tickets. But some might surprise you. You will not receive any additional discount on Safeway Club Card Savings or Safeway Store Coupons (which may include most of the special sale prices in the ad.) So no double discounts. And, inexplicably, no discount on fluid milk.

The whole month of August is Sandwich Month. We will try to include sandwich ideas throughout the month—which may be handy since August is also the month when schools start up again.

If you’re a peach fan, you’re in luck! August is also peach month and peaches are on sale again for $.77 lb. at Fry’s and $.88 lb. at Sprouts.

August 7-12 is Farmer’s Market Week. Local harvests are in full swing now, so look for good produce at all the local Farmer’s Markets.

Special Sales This Month

Sprouts invites you to Earn Cash for Schools with boxtops for education, featuring such kid friendly fare as mac-and-cheese and crackers. Sprouts does not do a senior discount, but every Wednesday is double discount day—when you can get the sale prices from both last week’s and this week’s ad.

Recipes: How to Set up a Sandwich Bar

Consider how many people you are serving. For supper you will want to provide enough ingredients for 2 sandwiches per person. (If there are leftovers—lunch tomorrow.) Consider what these folks like if you know—don’t bother with mustard if no one likes it. This should be enough for 4 people. For a crowd, expand both amounts and selections.

8 slices of bread
small bowls of mayo and flavored, softened cream cheese
bottles of catsup and mustard
1 lb each sliced turkey breast and pastrami
(if you have vegetarians how about spiced black bean paste and/or a couple fried eggs)
1/2 lb each sliced mild cheddar and swiss cheese
lettuce leaves
A couple of sliced avocados on a small plate
sliced dill and bread and butter pickles

Set up a line on a counter or table with the ingredients above in the order given from left to right. Add plates at the beginning and napkins & forks at the end.

Bowls of green salad and chips to the far right.

Slow Cooker Pork Chops and Onions

Root Beer Float
Interesting, not how I was taught—but.

Recipe: Quinoa with Mushrooms

Pretty simple. Just cook your Quinoa in twice the water—like rice. Saute some sliced mushrooms in olive oil. Now mix them together. Add a little bit of chopped fresh herbs if you have some, rosemary & thyme maybe, or dried if you don’t have fresh. Sometimes a finely minced green onion is good.
