Sales, Menus & Recipes: Sweets for the Sweet

08 February 2018

It’s Valentines Day Again

Remember when you used to look at the paper on Wednesdays for the food section? There would be pages of recipes, cooking hints, and grocery ads. Well, think of this as your cooking section, all in one article and so much better, because we bring in videos from all across the world that show you how to make the delicious dishes!

A lot is happening this week.  This column now has a new name to go with the new format. That’s in response to comments like, “Oh, there are recipes in it? I thought there were just sale prices.”

Valentines day is almost upon us. Both menus and recipes will feature special items to wow your sweetheart. Last year we featured a totally chocolate theme. And chocolate is great, no question. See the Truffles and the tutorial on tempering chocolate. But there are some who prefer non-chocolate sweets, or just like to change it up occasionally.

Hint: Melting Chocolate & White Chocolate

If you are melting chocolate, you can do so in the microwave. I use a 4-8 cup glass measuring cup, it makes it easier to see what's happening. Add in chocolate chips and butter. Put it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Take it out and stir it. Put it back in the microwave for 15-30 seconds. Remove and stir. Keep doing this until your chocolate is soft and melty. If you are using white chocolate, don't use butter, because it is likely to seize. Instead, use shortening.

This week is the first Wednesday in February—so Fry’s and Safeway will be giving a 10% discount to customers over 55 years old. It might be a good time to stock up if there are staples you need.

Sprouts did a customer survey a while ago to see which items people would like to see on sale. Their prices this week reflects some of those requests. And as always Sprouts has doubled ad Wednesday, when you can get all the prices from both last week’s ad and this week’s.

By the way, we mentioned last week that Sprouts had changed their website and it was a little glitchy. We're happy to report that it appears most of the glitches have been ironed out.

All three stores are bursting with roses, chocolate dipped strawberries, candy and other Valentines treats.

Don't these look delicious?

Specialty Days

February 8: Molasses Bar Day
February 9: Pizza Day
February 10: Cream Cheese Brownie Day
February 11: Peppermint Patty Day (yes! Homemade Peppermint Patties, take that, York! And only 5 ingredients.)
February 12: Plum Pudding Day (Did you know, plum pudding has never contained plums?)
February 13: Tortellini Day (It looks fabulous and elegant, yet it can be oh, so, easy!)
February 14: Cream-Filled Chocolates Day (Your Valentine will love you if you make this, trust me!)

As always, prices are for this area and for Safeway and Fry's will require at least a Club Membership card. Some may require digital coupons as well. We try to indicate all restrictions, special conditions etc. Sprouts does not require any cards and does not have any special savings days. Every week Sprouts has double ad Wednesday, when you get last week’s and this week’s ad prices. All three stores have digital savings available to those with appropriate accounts.

Go to their web pages for details and directions. Fry’s at least will give you the advertised digital price if you state you do not have the necessary technology. Safeway sometimes has coupons which you can access digitally or clip out of the ad.

Recipe: Dirty Rice

Dirty Rice is Southern Speak for cooked rice with additions.

Cook Rice of your choice. Brown rice or a mix of brown and wild works very well. Don’t be afraid to make plenty, it’s great for lunch. What you mix in depends on what you have. It’s a tasty way to use left overs. To serve with steak or roast try this.

1 cup diced onion
1 cup diced red and green bell pepper
1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 lb Crimini Mushrooms, sliced or diced
1 Tablespoon mixed fresh herbs

Sauté veggies in 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil. Add herbs and salt and pepper to taste. Mix into 4 cups cooked rice. Serve Warm.

2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
pinch each salt and pepper

Melt butter in pan over medium high heat. When butter is foamy add all the other ingredients except  cheese. Toss well, cover and steam 2 minutes. Taste. Day 6

Chopped Chef Salad
Dinner Rolls or Monti’s Roman Bread
Home Made Ice Cream with Fudge Sauce

Recipe: Monti’s Roman Bread

1 1/2 c water
1 TBS sugar
2 1/4 tsp yeast
2 TBS oil (I use olive oil)
4 c flour, I use bread flour
2 tsp salt
2 tsp Rosemary

Heat water in microwave about 45-60 seconds. Pour into mixing bowl, add sugar and stir slightly, add yeast and stir again. Let sit until yeast is bubbly.

Add in the oil. Gradually add in flour, salt and rosemary. Use enough flour for the dough to form a shiny ball.

Let rise until doubled.

Punch down, let rest about 5 minutes.

Flatten out until about 1 inch thick on oiled cookie sheet. Brush with oil (again, I use olive oil)  and sprinkle with additional rosemary and salt. Cut into 16 squares with pizza cutter.

Let rise until double, bake at 400º for 20-25 minutes.

Alas, Monti's Restaurant has closed, but this is the recipe for the bread they served. Some versions add in 1/2 c chopped onion. It is said that the recipe was used in the Monti family for at least 80 years, brought over from Italy.

Items on Sale:

There are several varieties of salad on sale at Sprouts this week, with savings between $.51 - $.99 on each. It's fast and easy, perfect for those busy nights.
