Specialized Care at Home is Preferred Over Facilities

Specialized Care in the Home Is Care That Is Focused on Each Individual’s Needs and Conditions

As we age, our needs, both physiologically and socially, will change. Despite medical concerns, research has shown that nearly 90 percent of the aging population would prefer to remain at home as they grow older. Therefore, one of the most significant things that impact how we age in place is the understanding of specialized care in the home and how we can identify when it is needed. Many don’t realize that seniors can remain in their homes even if they require the skilled and experienced care to support the advanced care needs that come with dementia, Parkinson’s, cancer and other diagnoses.

Specialized care in the home is care that is focused on each individual’s needs and conditions, cen-tering on their long and short-term goals. The caregivers in place must be compassionate, patient and have an understanding of, and experience with, all underlying conditions. They must also be able to maintain and provide a safe environment. Caregivers receive specialized training so that they are able to address the client’s needs with a specific care plan. Each individual care plan for specialized care is created based on best practices, proven research and is overseen by expert care management.

Identifying when specialized care in the home is needed can be challenging, especially in the early stages. Medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s, and other chronic diseases, whether transitioning from rehab to home or actively in place, require a more personalized care plan. Basic home care assistance will include support with hygiene, continence issues, dressing, ambulating, meal preparation, reminders for medications, light housekeeping tasks, transportation and more. Specialized care goes above and beyond the standard care, and can even include emo-tional support to help the client focus on a purposeful and meaningful life regardless of diseases or chronic conditions.
