August 1 is World Lung Cancer Day

01 August 2016

Lung cancer is more common than one might realize.

Lung cancer was relatively rare in the early 20th century, but now it has become the most common type of cancer in the world. According to the Days of the Year website, lung cancer accounts one in five cancer deaths globally. As a matter of fact, lung cancer claims more lives yearly than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.

August 1, World Lung Cancer Day, was started by a lung cancer survivor as a grassroots effort. Embraced by the lung cancer community, it is a day to celebrate survivors, remember those who have passed and spread awareness about the impact of lung cancer to the general public.

If you or anyone you know experiences any of these early signs of lung cancer consult with your health care provider:

  • A cough that is getting worse and lasts for weeks
  • Coughing up blood or rust-colored phlegm
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Hoarseness
  • Pain in bones
  • Unintentional weight loss

“Recognizing the signs of lung cancer is key to early detection and life-saving treatment,” according to the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer

There are many other lung disorders, of course. According to the Lung Institute, Prescott, Arizona is considered the 2nd best place in the country to live for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), due to it's excellent air quality.
