Prescott Area Man Identified as Suspect in Officer Involved Shooting Incident
The Prescott Police Department has identified the suspect in the Officer Involved shooting which occurred on April 5, as 28 year old Prescott resident Tyler Sherman. Sherman remains under medical care in a Phoenix area hospital, in stable, but serious condition.
Based on witness statements and evidence collected at the scene, investigators determined that during the early morning hours on April 5th, there were five adults at the residence on Wagon Wheel. Detectives learned that Sherman was invited to the house by 36 year old female who had been staying there with friends. Sherman was involved in a physical confrontation with a 50 year old male who had also been staying at the home. Sherman produced a knife and stabbed that male victim several times on the arm. That male and the 36 year old female left the home and went to the hospital for treatment.
As Officers were responding to the hospital to investigate the original report of a stabbing, residents on Wagon Wheel called to report a woman yelling for help. As officers arrived on scene, they located a second couple; a 35 year old male, and a 27 year old female, and a 66 year old male. The 25 year old male was bleeding from what was determined to be multiple stab wounds to the head, neck and arms.
The three adults told officers that Sherman was inside the home a home on Wagon Wheel and that he had been the one to inflict the injuries to both male victims.
Sherman was located at the home and refused to comply with officers. Sherman was making threatening statements and acting aggressively by throwing knives, hammers and other objects at the officers. He was ultimately shot by two officers.
During the course of the investigation, detectives were able to determine that both of the male victims were stabbed after they confronted Sherman about his behavior towards one of the women at the home. The woman did speak with investigators and reported that during the evening, Sherman had sexually assaulted her and held her against her will by using a knife to subdue and threaten her.
Both male victims were treated for their injuries and released from area hospitals, after receiving serious injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.
Sherman had recently been released from the Arizona Department of Corrections, and has an extensive criminal history.
The investigation continues as new information may continue to be brought forth. Charges against Sherman are pending and additional charges will be determined in cooperation with the the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office.
