Competition Fierce in Steel Shoe Classic

Photo: Steve Harman battled hard to pull out the tournament championship

The Steel Shoe Classic was held on Saturday at the Watson Lake Courts in Prescott, with temperatures in the 70s and a few clouds floating overhead.

It was a strong day of competition as all players ended the day with at least one win, including three games that came down to the final pair of shoes, but it was a pair from Surprise who took home the top spots in the Class A and B categories. Steve Harman, of Surprise, needed an extra game to overcome John Lincoln, who had a big game to beat Harman, tying the two for the top spot at the end of regulation play. Harman (5-2) pulled it all together to best Lincoln (4-3) for the overall tournament championship. Hal Handelman, of Chino Valley split the day with a (3-3) mark, ended up in third.

Class B winner was Robert Chubinsky from Surprise, who went (3-1) on the day. Chubinsky pitched 1.33 over his average on the day. Jay Mast of Prescott Valley finished in second place. Terry Sloan of Prescott took third.

Thanks to all of you who came out. It was great weather to play in, and also everyone for their help, especially Trisha Lincoln with her score keeping expertise. We look forward to seeing her back on the courts someday soon.

The Mile Hi Horseshoe Club will host the second day of a two day tournament sponsored by the Prescott Resort, on Sunday, September 10. Prescott Valley will host day one on Saturday, September 9. Start time both days is 9am, and is opened to all sanctioned players. For information, email   pitchupnorthaz.td@gmail.com
