Prescott Schools: #RedforEd Walk-About
Featured

25 April 2018   Prescott Schools

It’s not a walkout. It’s a Walk-About.

Update, 4/25/18, a letter from Joe Howard:

Dear PUSD Families, Colleagues and Community:

The Prescott Unified School District, as you may have heard, will be having school tomorrow. This has put many of our teachers and staff under great pressure, with some saying that we are not supporting a greater good to hold out for the funding that Arizona schools have been starving for. I share this with you today because our compromise was to have a late start on Thursday and an early release on Friday so that we can rally before school and demonstrate our need and try to educate our Arizona citizens on the dire need for funding in our classrooms.

What can you do? Show up. You can tell your friends and neighbors to show up, and honor our compromise to have school while showing your support for positive change in education in Arizona.

Here are the details:

Prescott Unified School District invites all teachers, parents, students, and community members to “Walk About for Education.”

WEAR RED

Thursday, April 26 starting at 7:45 A.M.
and Friday, April 27 starting at 2:00 PM
Prescott Courthouse Square

Please share this information widely.

Sincerely, Joe Howard

On Monday, Prescott Schools Superintendent Joe Howard released this information:

On Friday, after several hours of meeting with our RedforEd teacher representatives from each PUSD school, we found a plan to alleviate a walk out at this time. Instead of a walk out, our PUSD folks are doing a "Walk About" at the courthouse square. We are grateful for the compromise and creativity to accomplish bringing attention to the dire funding issues in Arizona, while still providing school for our students. Please join us at the courthouse if you can.

On Thursday, April 26, PUSD will start school with a two-hour delay, such as we would use during a snow day. All services will run two hours later than normal. On Friday, April 27, we will conduct an early release, just like we do on a normal Wednesday afternoon (except PHS will get out at 12:05 instead 2:29 on this Friday only). We will follow schedules normally followed on Wednesdays (except PHS). Detailed schedules will be coming your way.

During the late start and early release, teachers will be gathering with parents and community members at the courthouse plaza for the Walk About to inform others about the serious needs in the Arizona education funding system. Details of those events will also be coming your way.

This plan allows us to still meet required classroom minutes, and still allows a safe place both days for our students to include transportation, meals and instructional services. We will not need to add days to the end of the year.

We appreciate the working together of all involved in order to accomplish the needs of everyone. I believe that this is a special way to handle this, that could only happen in a community like Prescott, and in a district like PUSD.

Depending on what happens at the state level in the next few days and weeks, there may be more decisions and changes in the future with regard to school closures. PUSD will communicate as often as possible with our families and community.

We will be providing information on details, as well as any new information as it comes available.

THANK YOU!
