Road Work Causes Closure of Wolf Creek Road South of Prescott

The Yavapai County Public Works Department, working in conjunction with the Prescott National Forest will begin maintenance work to repair and improve Forest Service Road 97 (Wolf Creek Road) starting on Monday November 26, 2022, and continue through February 1, 2023. The County Public Works Department will start in Ponderosa Park working east to Senator Highway.

Various types of heavy equipment will be used to make extensive repairs to the road which include the replacement of 45 culverts, erosion control, raising and redirecting the roadbed, and improving access to dispersed recreation sites. Repairs are needed to improve the road for public safety, wildfire response and for recreation use.

Heavy equipment being used will make FSR 97 impassable until work is completed. In the interest of safety, the four-mile segment of FSR 97 from Ponderosa Park to Senator Highway will be closed to forest visitors. This includes access to FSR 74, FSR 97B and Trail 384 (Wolf Creek Loop Trail).

During construction, motorists are expected to respect and follow temporary traffic control measures. There will be traffic signs in place warning oncoming traffic of road construction ahead that will remain in place until maintenance/repairs have been completed and the road is safe for public use. Work is scheduled to start in the month of November but could be delayed depending on weather conditions. Although road managers hope to complete the work as soon as possible, the public should anticipate certain road restrictions and possible temporary road closures while work is being performed.
