Prescott Sings "It's A Small World"

22 October 2007
When I saw the casting notice for Prescott Fine Arts Association’s “It’s a Small World” I wondered how they were going to pull off a play based on a – well, I’d say a fairly repetitive song from a ride at Disneyland. No worries, as director Jo An Ramsey decided to think “outside the ride,” and pulled it off beautifully.

According to the program, Director Ramsay “Expanded, reorganized and added dialogue” to the original 1987 play, and the results were wonderful. The cast of 31 children and one adult filled the stage with smiles, dancing, and singing in those sweet clear tones that are only possible with children.

And yes the song “It’s a Small World” was sung and it was a lot of fun. My first grader, Danielle, was sitting next to me and wanted to sing along. The program featured some traditional songs and dances from around the world, and some very familiar tunes such as “Frere Jacques,” “Up, Up and Away,” and “The Bus Song.” When The Beatles tune, “She Loves You” came up it was accompanied by the traditional screaming that seemed to accompany The Beatles everywhere they went.

I really enjoyed the musical, and it was made even more fun by Danielle nudging me throughout the program with a grin on her face saying, “I know that one! And that one too!” The play was just the right length, and there was never a moment where anyone, adult or child, would lose interest.

The play runs October 26th and 27th at 7:00 pm, and October 27th at 2:00. So grab your kids and head down to Prescott Fine Arts Theatre on Marina. If you don’t have any kids, either borrow some or just go for the fun of it.
