Prescott, AZ, July 24, 2013 – Jerry Showalter, a Big Brother from Yavapai County, has been awarded the Arizona “State Big Brother of the Year” Award.
Annually, member agencies of the state alliance are encouraged to honor mentors for their commitment and respectively nominate their winners to the state for further recognition. The Alliance consists of thousand of Big Brothers and Big Sisters from multiple Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies throughout the state.
Jerry and his Little Brother, Spencer, have been matched for over four years. Spencer is being raised by his Grandmother who has many health problems that make it difficult for her to care for him. Spencer's grandmother has said of their match, "When Jerry came into Spencer's life it was like a miracle."
Since the match began, Spencer has moved 8 times and through all of this, Jerry never missed an outing and made sure that Spencer always got to school. When asked about his match, Spencer said, "Jerry has always been there for me and I'm never going to disappoint him by messing up." Some of the things they enjoy doing together are going hiking, boating, golfing, camping and much more.
Jerry Showalter is also a past recipient of the Arizona Cardinals “Community Quarterback Award” in recognition of his volunteer spirit and leadership.
