Chino Valley School District & Chino Valley Education Foundation Feed families for holiday

The Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD), partnering with the Chino Valley Education Foundation (CVEF) Hungry Kids Project, the Chino Valley Police Foundation, and local retailers Safeway and Costco, were able to provide 20 local families with full Thanksgiving meals for the holiday.

“We’d like to really thank the staff at Safeway who had everything ready for us this morning and even helped us load up our truck,” said John Scholl, CVUSD Superintendent. “But this isn’t a one-time project, Laurie (Marley) works all year long to ensure that our students and their families are well cared for.”

Marley, the CVUSD Family Resource Specialist/Homeless Coordinator, said she has approximately 100 students visiting her office each month seeking various forms of assistance. Her office is housed at Chino Valley High School’s “Kalen’s Kloset”, the on-campus resources center named in honor of former Chino Valley High School student Kalen Earle who lost his battle with cancer in 2008.

Kalen’s Kloset is stocked with clothing, personal hygiene items, food, and various other supplies, all available free of charge to students in need throughout the year. Marley said that in addition to the more than 180 students currently on her Christmas for Kids  list this season, the CVUSD has 434 students listed as “homeless” this year.

“Homeless does not mean they are living on the street,” said Marley.  “It means they are lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence. To my knowledge that is more than Prescott and Prescott Valley combined.”

Donations are needed in many forms, from clothing, backpacks, personal items, and of course monetary donations are always appreciated.

For more information on needed supplies or to arrange donations, Marley can be reached by phone at 928-583-5422 or by email at lmarley@chinovalleyschools.com.
