Ramirez, Williams Win In Memorial Tourney

The Arizona Seamless Gutters Memorial Day Tournament was held at Watson Lake in Prescott. This was the first horseshoe pitching tournament held by the Mile Hi Horseshoe Club at their home courts this year.

The previous tournaments were held in Prescott Valley, since Watson Lake was home base for the fire fighting personnel battling the Crooks Fire. Club members have been working hard to get the courts ready and have achieved nearly what they had started.

Windy conditions did play a part in the way the pitchers had to approach throwing their shoes. The players were either going into the wind, or with the wind, which required some adjustment. Every player’s average was down except one.

The day featured two power classes. Class A winner was Modesta Ramirez of Kingman, who swept the entire top division to earn herself a big win. Hal Handelman’s only loss was to Ramirez, allowing him to pick up second place. Mike Brewer edged out Patti Lopez-Cepero to claim third. Ramirez  also had the days top ringer percentage at 46%.

Prescott’s own Cody Williams, despite dropping his last contest, won the Class B division, and was the only player who pitched above his average. The final two award spots were won by Doug Strong, second place, and Joe Starika, third place, edging out Miguel Castro. All the players in both divisions were able to get at least one win.

Prescott will host their next tournament on Saturday, June 11. Start time is 9 am. Email MileHiHorseshoeClub@outlook.com for more information on how to become a part of these competitive and fun events.
