Frontier Fun & Entertainment at the Living History Adventure, May 14 – Sharlot Hall Museum

This Saturday, May 14, the Sharlot Hall Museum will come to life with Living History interpreters, activities, games, and more. The theme, “Entertain Me,” introduces guests to the home-grown pastimes of Territorial Prescott.

Early settlers in Arizona often created their own entertainment, from music and socializing to crafts, games, and stories. Community gatherings were popular in early Prescott and included notable events such as a New Year’s Eve masquerade ball. Visitors to Saturday’s Living History Adventure will have the chance to make their own masquerade mask and learn a waltz at the Governor’s Mansion–taught in the first-person by second Territorial Governor Richard McCormick and his young wife Margaret!

Card games, another popular diversion in Victorian times, allowed young and old to pass the time agreeably. Visitors are invited to try their hand at several historic card games–or the classic gambling game of the American West, Faro.

Living History interpreters will go about their day, modeling trades and lifestyles of early Prescott. Stop by the Print Shop to pick up a playbill, enjoy a social shopping spree at the Mercantile, call on Mrs. Frémont in the Frémont House, and whirl through a waltz at the Governor’s Mansion. School is out, but the Schoolhouse is open for youngsters to try a game or two. Smell the savory snacks simmering in the Ranch House, and watch the Blacksmith work his magic.

See all this and more at May’s Living History Adventure, this Saturday, May 14, at the Sharlot Hall Museum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Museum members and youth ages 12-under get in free. More information is available at the Museum’s website.

The Sharlot Hall Museum, located two blocks west of Prescott’s Courthouse Plaza, is one of Arizona’s premier history museums. Its four-acre campus tells Arizona’s story through exhibits, gardens, and historic buildings, including the 1864 Territorial Governor’s Mansion. Events and programs include the annual Prescott Indian Art Market, monthly Living History Adventure days, and more.
