It wasn’t the pitcher’s duel that was played out in Flagstaff Tuesday night, but the end result was a Coconino 12-5 win over the Badgers at Prescott High School.
The Panthers jumped on top in the second. Izabel Pozar doubled, and could have been out on a fielder choice rundown as she was nearly tagged out by Gracie Pereira. Instead it left runners at first and third with two out. Kaitlyn Tso, who had originally hit the ball ended up at second. Maddi McDermed singled in the two base runners for the 2-0 lead.
Prescott threatened in the bottom of the inning, when Ava Hlavacek singled to left. Eliza Legge got hit by the pitch, which turned out to be bigger than just leaving the two runners on base. Legge, who struck out 24 two days ago, took a pitch to her throwing arm in the bottom of the second. Legge came out to warm up before the top of the third, but just could not go. Ruby Tessman entered and threw the final five innings.
Tessman shut out the Panthers in her first inning of work, but the Badgers had nothing to show for their efforts, leaving the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning.
Coconino doubled their score to 4-0 in the top of the fourth when CJ Gonzales knocked in Cierra Derr. Danika Kern’s sacrifice fly added one more. The Panthers added two more in the fifth.
Prescott finally got the goose egg off the board in the fifth. RJ Parra walked and scored on a Ruby Tessman RBI double, cutting the deficit to 6-1. Coconino went ahead 8-1 before the Badgers attempted a comeback in the sixth. Elle Long singled in Sydney Krahulik and RJ Parra to make it 8-3. Tessman singled in Long, and it was 8-4.
The Panthers ended the game with four more runs, and Prescott scratched out one more in the seven run loss. Kaitlyn Tso pitched a second complete game for Coconino in as many days, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, striking out eight and walking four. Eight different players had at least one RBI for the Panthers. Ruby Tessman had three hits with two RBIs, and Elle Long had two RBIs and one hit for the Badgers
The loss drops the Badgers to (6-8-1) and more importantly (1-3) in the Grand Canyon Region. Prescott will visit Mohave on Tuesday at 3:45 pm. Coconino improves to (2-0) and (10-4)).
