Guys and gals from Yavapai Exceptional Industries (YEI!) have enjoyed visiting Full Swing Sports Center in Prescott Valley to use the batting cages, shoot hoops, play air hockey, and more, as part of YEI’s Developmental Activities Program.

Brad Newman, Executive Director at YEI!, said the program is “meant to enrich one’s life through outings and experiences that promote integration and independence.”

YEI-hoos, as Newman affectionately refers to the guys and gals, get to experience a variety of healthful–and fun–activities during their weekly visits to Full Swing.

Kathy Lilley, Activity Coordinator at YEI!, said the guys and gals “just like to get out and spend some time out and about.” She said YEI! guys and gals have been visiting Full Swing regularly for several years, and the center’s owner, Jeff Sandy, is “so accommodating to us—he always gives us a break.”

Also, she said, “He knows everybody’s names and makes everyone feel really at home.”

At Full Swing, that means batting, playing digital golf and air hockey, buying almonds and other snacks, and, on most occasions, ending with a game of Zombies (where players throw balls at zombies on a screen).

The outings include an opportunity for the YEI! crew to practice behaving appropriately when they’re out, and for members of the public—whom Lilley called “really supportive”—to see YEI-hoos in town.

“We are grateful for them opening up their facility to us,” Newman said.

Through the Developmental Activities Program, YEI-hoos will also have the chance to visit Bearizona, the library, and Armadilla Wax Works.

YEI! is a charitable organization founded in 1974 to support adults with disabilities living in the Central Highlands by providing them with job training, employment, volunteer placements, and support services. The “Developmental Employment” program at YEI! includes the award-winning “Community Contribution Corps” and has been continually accredited at the highest level of service by the National Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities since 1978.
