Chino Valley Schools is in the middle of a search for a new principal at Del Rio School (DRS), the District’s 3rd grade through 5th grade school located in the heart of Chino Valley. Carolyn Reeder, the current DRS principal, will be moving into a district position as an administrator on assignment to help teachers across the whole district better address the needs of our special populations. Mrs. Reeder will be missed at DRS but the entire District will benefit from her expertise in curriculum and instruction.
Recommending a principal candidate to the governing board to hire is one of the most important responsibilities of a superintendent. I have been reflecting on principals that I have worked for, principals that have worked for me, and other principals that I have had interactions with either as an educator, a student, or a parent to develop in my mind a profile of the right principal for DRS.
As part of this reflection and in developing the profile of an ideal principal, I have been reading about what it takes to be an effective principal. Here are some of the characteristics that rose to the top. Instructional leader – works with teachers to provide support and guidance in teaching and learning. Visionary – the ability to mobilize staff to a goal through persuasion, charisma, and passion. Relationship Builder – the ability to develop meaningful relationships with students and staff that facilitate teaching and learning. Problem Solver – ability to solve a wide variety of problems involving students, parents, and staff.
Earlier I mentioned how important selecting a principal is for a superintendent. After classroom teachers, research shows that principals have the next greatest impact on student achievement. Effective principals also increase teacher and staff retention by developing a school culture that is conducive to teaching and learning and cultivates leadership in others. An effective principal can increase student attendance and decrease behavioral incidents.
As I am writing this article, we just completed our paper screen of candidates for the DRS principalship. The District will be conducting interviews on March 23rd which will include an interview with a committee, I will interview the candidate separately, the candidates will be part of a meet and greet with teachers and staff at DRS, they will have dinner with the governing board, and they will finish the day with a community meet and greet.
With input from the committee along with comments from the teacher/staff and community meet and greets, I will make a recommendation to the governing board at their April 11th meeting.
