The Prescott Badgers opened up the playoffs by beating the Thunderbird Titans 80-70, in the Badger Dome. It is the third time this season the Badgers have beaten Thunderbird. It is also the first time in over two decades that Prescott has hosted a playoff game.

Jason Parent led the Badgers with 37 in his home finale. Parent said, ”It has been amazing. I have made a lot of friends here, and the support has been great. I’m glad I played the way I am capable of tonight. This was a good win for us and we will see who we get next.” Parent now has a season total of 724 points, adding to his all-time Prescott scoring record. That works out to a 26.8 average.

Parent’s amazing total was not the high for the game. That went to Thunderbird junior Marshall Kerley, who hit shots from all over, finishing with 42. Kerley started the game with a pair of free throws on technical foul for a pregame slam dunk by Prescott. Thunderbird led 5-0 before the Badgers even got the ball. Jonas Carman nailed a three to get the Badgers on the board. Prescott took their first lead at 8-7 on a Parent steal and slam dunk. The Badgers came back to take the lead again on a Uriah Tenette three pointer, to go up 13-12. Tenette would finish with 15. Deadlocked at 14, the Badgers went on a 9-3 run to end the quarter.

Parent had a big second quarter that includes a steal and a reverse slam dunk too increase the Badger lead to 40-33. Prescott led going to the locker room 44-34.

Thunderbird came back a few different times in the second half, as Marshall Kerley kept knocking down shots. Prescott coach Travis Stedman said, “We talked about guarding him at halftime, but he still managed to get open looks. He had an amazing game.” Thunderbird pulled within four at 52-48, but Prescott went up 60-50 on baskets by Parent, Carman and Zane Gaul, but Kerley dropped in a pair of threes to make it 60-56 with 5:56 remaining.

Badgers pulled away for good with another slam dunk by Parent to lead 67-58 with 3:13 left. Thunderbird was unable to recover and the Prescott made their free throws to win by 10. Thunderbird’s Kerley with 42, and Jordan Bateman with 13, combined for 55 of the 70 points. Kerley also led with 8 rebounds, and was one of three players with 4 assists.

Stedman added, “We treated this week with the idea that those other games against them did not matter. I didn’t want to see Thunderbird again because they have been playing so well in the past three weeks. I know we have the ability to score anytime, I’m just not sure we could get enough stops. Tonight we did that.”

Prescott improves to (17-10) on the season, Thunderbird ends their year at (14-12). The AIA will release the playoff brackets on Saturday, and Prescott will know where they will play next.
