The Lady Panthers had many chances to extend the lead, but Prescott kept it close with good defense and buckets by Rayne Libis and Huttmann.

The whole complexion of the game changed in the second half, as Coconino came out energized, increasing the tempo, which caused problems for the Lady Badgers. Rayne Libis managed a three pointer for the third quarter highlight for the home team.

The Lady Panthers went ahead 39-21 after three quarters, which made the final eight minutes a formality. Turnovers, along with second and third chance points by the more aggressive Coconino team resulted in their 25 point win.

The two top teams in the Grand Canyon Region met Tuesday night and it was a battle not for the faint of heart. The Coconino Panthers held on to beat the Prescott Badgers 69-67 in a game that had about everything you could imagine in a high school basketball game.

The Badgers had a slow start trailing 4-0 in the first two and a half minutes. Jason Parent opened up the Badgers scoring on a rebound and put back at 5:19 on the clock to trim the Panther lead to 4-2. Both teams had trouble with execution on offense, as the defense and physicality of the game rose to the top.

Zane Gaul rebound and put back tied the game at six, at the 2:50 mark.  The Panthers scored the final six of the quarter to lead 17-8. It has been a while since the Badgers trailed after the opening quarter, let alone being held to single digits. Things changed quickly in the second quarter.

Prescott erupted with a 14-0 run to start the second. A pair of three pointers by Parent got the Badgers within 17-14.  Uriah Tenette’s three tied the game at 17, then a bucket by Parent, another three by Tenette flipped the score. A second after Tenette nailed his second three to go up 22-17,  he turned to the Coconino student section and the official gave him a technical foul. Two free throws by Rufus Cobb ended the run. Washington hit a three to cut the Badger lead to 22-21.

The lead changed six times in the final minutes of the first half, but Prescott was able to go up at the break.

Logan Jex knocked down a three to end the half, but then officials went towards the Prescott bench that was celebrating after getting the 35-32 lead. The ref called another technical foul on the Badgers. The reason was over excessive celebration, which was a ridiculous call by any stretch of the imagination.

The second half started with Rufus Cobb hitting one of two free throws for the technical called at the end of the half. Prescott started off the second half, much like the first, and it cost them the lead.

Mitchell Jacobsen connected on a three, putting the Panthers up 36-35. In a very sweet play, Tenette fired a pass to  Parent for the slam and the Badgers were back up 37-36.The game was eventually tied at 39.

The shooting got hot briefly as Memphis James and Jason Parent exchanged a pair of buckets each. A very odd jump ball call by the trailing official on a dribble drive by Parent gave Coconino the ball back. The clock failed to start, but the Panthers did not score to end the third quarter, as the home team held on to a 47-46 lead.

Zane Gaul, who finished with another double-double, got another basket off a rebound to give the Badgers a 59-54 lead with four minutes left. Prescott failed to extend the lead on a couple of long shots that didn’t draw iron, allowing the Panthers to tie the game at 59 on a Holloway three.

Parent knocked down a pair of free throws for a 61-59 lead with two minutes left. Hollaway hit his third three of the game to put Coconino up 62-61.

Tenette went coast to coast to give the Badgers a 63-62 lead. After a Prescott timeout, Ivory Washington’s three put Coco back up 65-63. Tenette’s pull up jumper tied the game at 65.

The Panthers took a timeout leading 69-65 with just five seconds left, after four consecutive free throws by Rufus Cobb.

Things got crazy in those final seconds when Prescott’s Chris “Pippy” Brown fouled Coconino’s Jordan Holloway.  Mitchell Jacobson got into Browns face, prompting officials to call a technical foul. Coconino coach Moran did not like that, storming onto the court to let his feelings known to the official, who promptly teed him up.  Holloway went to the line for the foul by Brown, missing both, leaving the door open for the Badgers.

Prescott had a chance to tie the game, but it was not meant to be. As Jason Parent went to the line, many students from the Coconino student section ran down to the other side to be a distraction, as school personnel, including an official, warning them to stay back. Parent made just two of four free throws, accounting for the two technical fouls. Brown inbounded the ball and Tenette’s three hit off the backboard to end the game.

Parent, who played the entire game, led all scorers with 31.

Badger coach Travis Stedman said, “Coconino played a great game, and we just did not execute down the stretch like we should have and it costs us. We really missed Jake Hilton tonight and what he brings to the court, but at the end you have to give Coconino credit.” Hilton is out with an injury, and his return has not yet been determined.

Coconino extends their win streak to 10 games and are on top of the Grand Canyon Region with a (6-1) record and (16-5) overall. The Badgers (8-2) and (15-9), will be off till next Tuesday when they host Mingus at 7pm. The loss snapped the Prescott five game win streak.
