The Prescott Badgers needed an extra 20 minutes to remain unbeaten, with a 4-2 win over the Bradshaw Mountain Bears, at Prescott High School last night.

The #1 Badgers and Bears couldn’t settle things in regulation, so a pair of ten minute overtime sessions were needed for Prescott to retain the Rival Cup for the fifth straight time. The first goal in overtime was scored by Johann Gundermann and the second by Edgar Martinez, the freshman/senior combo accounted for all four goals on the night.

A good size crowd was able to see the entire game, as the sun was setting, as the latest edition of the rivalry. Prescott won 7-0 last year in Prescott Valley, and had not lost to the Bears since a 3-1 setback on January 25, 2017. As the evening continued to cool down, the action on the field remained heated. Both teams battled hard with a good number of players going down to the turf, but nothing serious.

Bradshaw Mountain scored first when Hayden Rice found himself in the right place at the right time with 32:18 left in the first half.  A free kick by the Bears traveled across the front of the Badgers goal. Goal keeper Bryan Granados-Estrada stretched out to deflect the ball, that ended up right in front of Rice, who slipped it just into the left side of the net. Despite leading 4-3 in shots taken, the Badgers trailed 1-0 at the half.

Prescott responded quickly in the second half with just over 70 seconds played, as an energized attack resulted with a game tying goal by Johann Gundermann. The game stayed that way till Jair Montoya powered the ball into the net for a 2-1 lead with 16:18 remaining.

The pressure on the Bradshaw Mountain side of the field by the Badgers finally paid off 7:09 left in regulation, as Edgar Martinez slammed the ball past the Bears goal keeper for a 2-2 tie.

Prescott now with the momentum, kept the pressure on Bradshaw Mountain, but the clock ended up at 0:00, sending the game to overtime.

The first ten minutes resulted in missed opportunities by both squads, but it was the final ten minutes that provided the game winning goals for the home team.

Johann Gundermann said, “In the first half our heads were slacking. Last year we beat this team 7-0, and thought we would have an easy game. They really put up a fight, and we had to pull through in the second half.”

Edgar Martinez said, “We played as a team. We were composed, and we played against a really good opponent, but we kept our mentality, and through the final half we pulled ourselves together, and we beat them.”

The Badgers (2-0) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (7-0) overall will face a tough test in Bullhead City on Wednesday, as they face the unbeaten and #4 ranked Mohave Thunderbirds at 6pm.

The Prescott Lady Badgers fourth quarter rally came up short in a 56-48 loss to Lee Williams in the Badgers Dome.

Janie Rudy, who finished with 17 points to lead Prescott, led the fourth quarter charge with 13 points in that quarter alone.

Prescott trailed by just two after one quarter, but the second and third quarters were where the hole was dug. The Badgers were outscored 30-17 in those 16 minutes, and trailed 42-27 after three quarters.

Lady Badger Coach Jami Johnson said, “I am a little disappointed that we didn’t take better care of the ball. We got ourselves too far behind, but I was proud to see the girls battle back. They kept battling and it shows what we are capable of.”

Prescott falls to (0-6) in the Grand Canyon Region and (1-13) overall. The Lady Badgers will pay a visit to Bradshaw Mountain on Monday at 7 pm. Lee Williams improves to (3-2) in the GCR  and (8-6) overall.
